Chinese Whispers

Written by AiMsTeR

Christian

Christian was sitting in a small cafe off a small side street near the apartment. He had slowly gotten used to the ability to go out in public without anyone either recognising him as himself, or thinking that he was Taylor. After spending a good couple of weeks in hiding as himself again, he'd gotten back into the swing of being 'Neal'.

Sipping his coffee as he read a discarded paper, he suddenly couldn't help but catch a wayward name mentioned in conversation...

Avery?

His ears perked, he tried to listen in on the conversation. He figured that in New York there was bound to be more than one 'Avery', but there was always the chance... until he heard 'telepath' mentioned as well.

He turned his head to the side a little, and instantly distinguished that there was at least one telepath in on the conversation. Idiots. When he and Craig had discussed things like powers out in public, they'd at least had the decency to keep their voices low. At least if they were ignorant, they weren't likely to pick up on his shield even though he was so close to them.

He frowned as he concentrated, but he was dodging at least one other conversation between them. He heard something about a wedding in three days. Something about Tulsa. Something about famous brothers.

And bingo.

...Wedding?

He pulled his laptop over and looked up the Oklahoma wedding registry. Quickly skimming through, he soon found Jessica's name.

"Jess..." he whispered to himself, a little puzzled.

Oh wait, that was the sister that had never been around. Interesting. She actually found someone to spend her life with?

He closed the laptop and continued sipping his coffee thoughtfully. Judging by the tone of the conversation behind him, these weren't just innocent guests attending the wedding of a friend. He knew a plan when he heard it - even one as disorganised as this.

Something was going down at the wedding.

He glanced at his watch. It would take a few days at least to get to Tulsa. Unless they had teleporters on their side, he may even beat them to the pass.

He finished off his coffee and packed up his bag. Leaving a healthy tip, he left the cafe and headed back to the apartment.

What had Avery gotten herself into?
