Surviving

Written by Nessa

Avery

After a few nights of sleeping outside in Jackson's Square, Avery decided that she needed a new plan. She didn't know who she was, or what she was, there were so many voices in her head... much more than a normal person should have... but she knew that she couldn't keep sleeping on the streets, she'd had a few close calls already.

She had noticed that there was a girl who was out all night and returned mid morning to her apartment, and after tailing her for two days, Avery was fairly confident she had the routine down pat.

And so, when night began to fall, she pulled down the fire escape ladder and climbed it quickly, trying not to draw too much attention to herself. Once she reached the level she needed, she lifted the window sill carefully, marvelling at how this girl hadn't locked it, then climbed in, closing the window behind her. She stood still for a moment, ears pricked for sounds of movement, and hearing nothing to the affirmative, she walked around the small apartment, getting used to the layout. She double checked the front door was closed, and then head to the bathroom.

After a long hot shower, in which she also washed her own clothes, Avery wrapped the towel around herself and went into the kitchen. She felt a little bad about her behaviour, but she reasoned with herself that this was essential to her survival. She made herself a basic dinner of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and gulped down some water, before hanging her damp clothes up on the clothing rack in the bedroom. She found the girl's alarm and changed it for a couple of hours before she knew the girl would be home, and with only a moments hesitation, she lay down on the bed, pulling the blanket up around her shoulders.

Moments later, she drifted off to sleep.
