Avery blinked in the early morning, the chill from the night still in the air. Another few inches of snow had fallen overnight, and she pulled her coat tighter around her body. Truthfully, she didn't mind the cold, or the snow, and it gave Manhattan an ethereal vibe, like she was walking in a dream maybe.
She stopped off in a Starbucks to get herself a coffee, using it to warm her hands as she crossed the street into Central Park, smiling at one of the horse and carriage drivers, who was sitting in the carriage with a blanket over his lap.
She continued on and found her favourite bench, overlooking one part of the partially frozen over lake. She nursed her coffee, breathing in deeply through her nose, letting the silence of the park soothe her mind.
While she loved the business and the hustle and bustle of living in downtown Manhattan, she missed having a quiet space she could go to where she could just relax and lay back and focus on her breathing, block out the thoughts of the millions who lived in the city, and just... be. Just exist.
It was in the silence that she could practice her telepathy, here she had the peace and quiet and the beauty of the park to calm her down and help her keep everything under control. She felt safe to play with her own telepathic energy in the park. She was now in control enough to actually show someone her energy if they asked, but she usually kept it to herself. She'd shown Isaac years ago, and he'd told her that her eyes changed to the colour of her energy when she played with it, so when she was in public, she made sure to keep her eyes closed. Or wear sunglasses.
So here, on her own, she created up the device she'd invented long ago, one of her most basic designs that had been tweaked over the years... the sunstar, used as a headache tablet of sorts for her brain. She let it take over and cleanse her mind, leaving her feeling refreshed and ready to take on whatever life threw at her.
