Christian tried to sneak into the apartment, knowing Avery was usually home about this time. Under his arm he had a reel of LED lights wrapped in ragged cloth, his best attempt at keeping them secret.
He closed the door softly, then went over to the window. He'd worked out that if he unhinged just the first panel, he could fit through the gap and reach the landing above the pane. Because they were on the secondmost top floor of the building - and there was a much smaller apartment above them but further to the centre - there was a lot of roof space above them where no one was living.
Once he had the panel off he slung the lights over his shoulder and leant out the window. He felt with his hands for where the roof pane was, and managed to grab a section further up and hoist himself outside.
Once on the roof he found the loose panel he'd discovered last time he'd been up there and removed it, glad it wasn't too windy. He knelt down and placed the light reel under it, before quickly replacing it and climbing back down. Hopefully Avery would be none the wiser.
He made it back inside and fixed the window, before heading for the fridge to find some leftovers for dinner.
Avery
Avery had been napping in her bedroom, having fallen asleep while sketching. She thought she could hear noises in the ceiling, but then shook her head. She must've just been dreaming.
She yawned, sitting up, hearing Christian in the kitchen, and checked the time. Hunger won out over sleep and she went out to see what she could make herself for dinner.
