Two Sides

Faith

Faith smiled politely and cleared her throat, trying to snap Davis out of his little trance. He had been staring at her, completely speechless, since he'd opened his office door.

"Davis, right?" she tried.

Davis shook his head slightly. "Yes, uh... come in. Sorry. I should've been more prepared for... well, seeing as what Tru looked like."

"What she looked like?"

Davis gestured for Faith to sit down in the chair in front of his desk. He took his own seat and nodded. "Well yes. She was a pretty girl. Not that... not that that had anything to do with her abilities or indeed her intellect, it's just - "

Faith smiled slightly. "It's ok. She was beautiful."

Davis nodded. "So, I really shouldn't've been so surprised that you are, as well."

There was an awkward pause before Faith spoke. "So, this Jack Harper guy... what can you tell me?"

Davis leaned forward in his seat. "He's working for someone. That much is clear. Someone with an agenda that opposed Tru's, it seemed. While Tru saved lives, Jack... took them, in a way. But I have no doubt that he was working for someone higher than himself."

"What makes you think that?"

"His attitude," Davis told her. "He almost seemed to need guidance in every way, even in what his supposed mission was. He regretted the few times he beat Tru to the punch, as well. And things he used to say all hinted at him having a boss."

"Anything else?" she asked.

"I did some research when Tru first came to me," he replied. "About her abilities and where they came from. Those that were before her. I couldn't believe that it would suddenly start happening, she must have had a predecessor. My first thought was it was you."

Faith shook her head. "I don't have those abilities. Others, yes, but not those."

Davis nodded. "I know. Tru told me, and I found nothing to the contrary. I couldn't find Tru's direct predecessor, but I did find some information on the two sides."

"Two sides?"

"It seems Tru was caught in a war, of sorts," Davis said sadly. "Two sides, Jack and Tru. Tru's, of course, was a higher power, intent on saving those who asked for help. There is a school of thought, that when you die, you are offered the chance to come back. Not everyone is given this chance, mind you, and not everyone takes it, either. I think it would be, literally, one in a million."

Faith tucked her hair behind her ears. "And the other side?"

"Jack's side. His power stems directly from Tru's... or those like Tru. He will not be spoken to by the deceased, but his day rewinds as soon as her's do... did. So it's linked. His job is to stop Tru from saving that person, to make sure that the dead stay dead, if you will. And he seems to be working for an organisation who have that agenda."

"But why?" Faith asked. "I mean... I can see some logical benefits, but if people want a second chance..."

Davis shrugged. "I can't find much on Jack's organisation, obviously. Most of the things I've found I have pieced together. I can tell you that someone will succeed Tru, and that person might very well be in danger. Possibly from the same person."

There was a long silence.

"Do you... do you think Jack is right to do what he does?" she questioned.

"To be honest, I'm not sure it's right to get a second chance," Davis admitted. "But I believe Tru was right in trying to give that person a chance, if they asked for it. That was their basic wish and she respected it."

He slid a manila folder across the desk at her.

"This is everything I have."

"Thank you."
