"I heard," Edward said, jumping down from the tree branch he'd perched himself on, while waiting for Faith to come this way during her patrol.
"I thought you might find me soon," Faith said, glancing at him as he fell into step with her.
"Carlisle thought it best to give you some time," he told her. "Was that wrong of us?"
Faith flashed him a bemused smile. "No."
"Why do you smile at that?"
"Vampires are concerned for my emotional health. It strikes me as a little amusing."
"I suppose it is a little absurd," Edward agreed, allowing his normally stoic face to change into an expression of amusement. "Not only are we concerned for a human, but we're concerned for one who slays our kind."
"Quite the puzzle."
Edward glanced at her again as they moved down the path. "Would it be imprudent of me to inquire after your well being?"
Faith smiled again. "I'm... I don't know. Not fine. Not ok. Just... making it through the day, I guess."
"How is Sam?" Edward asked.
She shrugged. "Doing the same, I imagine."
"Does he know about me yet?" he questioned.
"He knows of you," Faith told him. "But to be honest, so much has happened lately that we haven't really delved into it."
"Are you ashamed of our friendship?"
"No," she replied, truthfully.
"Good."
They walked on in silence for a few minutes.
"I do not wish you to start training until you are well again," he said. "But I will not leave you unguarded."
"Edward, you don't have to watch me, I'm ok, really."
"Until you are fully ready and equipped to fight our kind, then I cannot leave you unguarded. It would be wrong of me."
"Edwar - "
Faith rolled her eyes as she turned to find he'd disappeared again.
