"It's not working, is it?" Avery said, staring straight ahead at the ocean. She leant on the wooden railing, propping her chin up with one hand.
JD shook his head. "Guess not."
She glanced over at him and smiled sadly. "But we had fun, didn't we?"
JD smiled back and slipped his arm around her. "Yeah, we did."
"It feels... different, this time," she said absently, leaning into his side.
"It does," JD mused. "I guess we both knew this was coming."
Avery nodded. "Yeah."
They stood in silence for a moment, before JD spoke again. "We're still best buds, right?"
"Yeah," she answered, letting out a chuckle. "Always."

"Am I killing him?" Lo asked, as soon as Avery walked through the door.
"No," the brunette grinned. "It was definitely the right thing for us to do."
"No tears?"
Avery shrugged. "I mean, we're still friends. I think... I think we just felt too much like friends towards the end. I love him for everything he's done for me, every great experience... but I'm not in love with him, and I think he feels the same way."
Lo nodded, and walked over to give her friend a hug. "I figured. Patrick and I had speculated. I'm glad you're ok."
"Thanks, Lo-lo."
