Little Shepherd

Written by Nessa and Michelle

Kate

Kate rocked back and forth in the chair in the nursery, softly humming to Shepherd. He blinked up at her, his big blue eyes focused on hers, a faint trace of a smile on his face.

"Happiness is a firecracker sitting on my headboard / happiness was never mine to hold / careful child, light the fuse and get away / cause happiness throws a shower of sparks..." she sang quietly.

Shepherd stretched his arms up as he yawned, his fingers groping the air above his head for a second, then he settled again, nestling further into Kate's arms.

Zac

Zac smiled from where he door at the nursery door, leaning against the frame.

"Hey," he said softly, so not to disturb Shepherd now that he was asleep, or close to it.

Kate

Kate looked up at the sound of Zac's voice and smiled.

"Hey," she whispered, standing carefully, and taking Shepherd over to his crib. She gently placed him down and tucked the blanket around him.

"He's falling asleep a little easier now," she said, walking over to Zac and kissing his cheek.

Zac

Zac grinned and lifted a hand to stroke her cheek.

"Always a blessing, that," he said, only half joking.

He kissed her lips gently.

Kate

"Fancy a cup of tea?" Kate asked, reaching for Zac's other hand.

She started to lead him in the direction of the kitchen.

Zac

Zac willingly let Kate drag him to the kitchen.

"Why I do believe that's a smashing idea, darling," Zac replied, having a sudden urge to put on an English accent. "Will that be one lump or two?"

Kate

Kate stuck her tongue out at Zac. "Shut up, I don't know why I phrased it so Englishly. Yes, that's a word."

She filled the kettle up and then plugged it in to boil the water.

"Do you think it's worrying that we haven't worked out Shep's power yet?"

Zac

"Nah," Zac said. "Saku's friend Amber is in college and she still has no idea what her specialty power is. It's pretty normal for powers to go unidentified for years."

He hoisted himself up on the bench.

Kate

"Good, good," Kate nodded, opening the cupboard to retrieve two mugs.

"I guess if you don't have an obvious power, it can be hard to know what it is."

Zac

"This is very true," Zac replied with a nod. "Ike and Nikki don't know what Monroe's power is yet either. Granted, Shep's a month or two older than Monroe, but that's not the point. Don't know what Heaven's powers are, or Brock's. Although, Brock is partly human, so he might not have any."

He made squeaking noises with his tongue as he thought.

"Actually, if I recall correctly, it took us awhile before we found out what Jess, Avie and Zoe's powers were too," he said. "Tay might have been awhile too, having Tongue and all. Me, Ike and Mackie made ourselves known soon enough."

Kate

Kate thought about it for a moment, while pouring the hot water into the mugs.

"Well, mine was pretty obvious as a kid, I think Russ and Rob didn't show theirs until a bit later on..."

Zac

"There you go," Zac said with a grin. "We can think of plenty of people who's powers didn't make themselves evident until later. We've got heaps of time to figure out what Shep can do."

Zac pushed himself off the counter.

Kate

"Let's hope it's nothing too destructive," Kate grinned.

She finished making the tea and handed Zac his mug.

"What are your plans for the rest of the day, dear husband of mine?"

Zac

"Thank you," Zac said.

He took a careful sip of his hot tea.

"I was thinking about giving myself the rest of the day off," he said. "My brain is feeling fried after attempting to teach Dee Dee how to read time."

Kate

"Aww, poor brain," Kate smiled.

"I was thinking about cooking something amazeballs for dinner, what are you in the mood for?"

Zac

"Something amazeballs," Zac replied jokingly.

He grinned at her and took another sip of his tea.

"I don't know," he said, putting the mug on the counter. "Something... meaty."

Kate

"Meaty and sweety with just a bit of treaty?" Kate grinned.

She leant over to kiss Zac on the cheek.

"I just wanted to do that."

Zac

Zac chuckled and kissed her back.

"Sounds delicious," he said with a grin.

Kate

"Ok," Kate nodded.

"Will you be ok with Ella if I duck out to get some food stuffs? I shouldn't be long."

Zac

"Sure, we should be fine," Zac replied with a nod.

He picked up his cup of tea again.

"Can you get some Dr Pepper? I think we're running low."

Kate

"I surely can do this for you," Kate nodded.

"Anything else you can think of?"

Zac

Zac sipped his tea and thought for a moment.

"Nope," he said. "That's the only thing that comes to mind. Anything you want me to do while you're out?"

Kate

"Can't think of anything that needs to be done," Kate replied, after thinking for a second.

She gave him another kiss on the cheek, before putting her mug in the dishwasher.

"I'll see you soon, then?"

Zac

Zac kissed her back.

"Alright then," he said. "See you, love you."
