Kate looked across at Zac and smiled slightly.
"So, your family first, then mine?" she clarified. "I wonder if anyone wil believe us right off..."
Zac
"Okay," Zac replied. "Sounds like a plan."
He rubbed his hands together.
"I guess we're about to find out."
Kate
"Considering I have met your family like... once... this should be fairly interesting."
Kate nodded.
Zac
"Yep," Zac nodded.
A little later they two were inside Diana and Walker's home. Diana was feeling slightly suspicious as they sat down with Zac and Kate in the lounge room.
Kate
Kate sat beside Zac, fidgeting nervously.
She looked to him to start the conversation.
Zac
"Well," Zac said. "Kate and I wanted to tell you that we're engaged."
Silence.
"Ahh," Walker laughed. "Very good Zac. You almost had me."
He knew exactly what day it was and how much his boys liked to play pranks. Diana pursed her lips.
"Umm, honey?" she said softly.
"Yes, dear?" Walker asked, still chuckling.
"They're serious."
"Hmm, what?" he looked at his wife, then at Zac and Kate.
Zac was nodding.
Kate
Kate smiled faintly and nodded.
"Yeah... sort of... sudden, I know."
Zac
Walker paused.
"Just a little," Diana said tersely. "Are... are you two sure about this?"
"More sure than I've ever been about anything," Zac replied seriously.
"Zac..." Walker frowned, then turned to Kate. "You're not pregnant are you?"
Kate
"Ah, no," Kate said, a little taken aback and slightly offended.
"We haven't... that's not the point."
Zac
"Dad," Zac began in complaint.
Walker held up his hand.
"Sorry," he said to Kate, before looking back at Zac. "I'm just trying to understand why you're getting married to someone you've only dated a couple of months."
"Did it happen to occur to you that we're in love?" Zac asked.
Before Walker could reply, Diana took his hand, giving him a stern look.
"They are," she assured him and turned to the newly engaged couple. "I admit I'm not without my reservations, but... congratulations."
"Thanks Mom," Zac said.
Kate
"Thanks," Kate said, smiling at Zac's parents. "We thought it might be harder to convince you guys... considering what the date is today."
Zac
Walker manage a wry smile.
"You'll probably have a harder time convincing Ike and Tay," Diana observed.
Zac chuckled.
"Actually," he said thoughtfully. "Tay's got that whole reading pheromones thing going, so maybe."
"I think it would depend on what he makes of the sense of mischief coming from you," Diana pointed out.
Zac grinned.
Kate
"I'm guessing we'll be telling everyone again tomorrow?" Kate grinned.
"Although, if Avery was around," Diana mused. "She could probably tell your siblings you were telling the truth."
Zac
"Probably," Zac said. "But I say we don't and wait and see how long it takes before they realise that it's not an April Fools Day joke."
He nodded.
Kate
Diana gave Zac a look at that statement.
"Yeah, I guess," Kate said uncertainly. She was still a little iffy considering she'd been proposed to on a whim and their families were going to have a hard time believing it was real. It wasn't exactly how she had envisioned the whole thing as a little girl.
Zac
"Well, mostly I mean Ike and Tay," Zac considered. "Besides I think that once Ike believes me he's going to give me crap after what happened with him and Nikki. But anyway. Obviously, it's not cool if your parents don't believe us. I was pretty sure you'd believe us Mom, but..."
He looked at Kate and held her hand.
"I don't suppose either of your parents are empathic or telepathic?"
Kate
"No," Kate said, thinking about her parents for a moment. "They shouldn't have a hard time believing it. If any of us kids were to pull a prank like this, it would be one of the twins."
Zac
"Okay then," Zac said, thoughtfully. "Any particular way you think we should approach them then?"
Suddenly he was nervous about telling Kate's parents. Diana caught his nervousness, and took Walker's hand, motioning for them to leave the two alone for now.
Kate
Kate shrugged.
"They trust my judgement, I don't see it being a problem. The only thing they can really object to is the fact I'm still in school and not really earning any money really."
Zac
Zac nodded.
"Well, no one ever said we had to get married stright away," he said. "Besides, I still need to get you a ring. Did you want to pick one out, or shall I surprise you?"
Kate
"I think you should surprise me. Unless you have bad taste."
Kate raised an eyebrow.
Zac
Zac laughed.
"I suppose that depends on if your prefer to have a virtual weapon on your finger or something more slimline," he grinned at her. "I personally like to avoid being stabbed..."
Kate
"Something mid size?" Kate suggested.
"This sounds horrible, but you know when girls show their rings off and they immediately go 'I know it's small...'? I don't want to be that girl."
Zac
Zac laughed.
"I think I can arrange that," he nodded.
He kissed her hand.
"So, shall we bid my parents adieu and go see yours?"
Kate
"Mine are at a picnic lunch thing today," Kate said, shrugging.
"So they're not going to be easy to get a hold of."
Zac
"Ahh, okay," Zac replied. "Well, we can leave them until later if you want."
He smiled.
"Completely up to you."
Kate
"Depends, I mean, we might as well hit up the ones in Tulsa before we head over to Georgia," Kate shrugged.
Zac
"Okay then," Zac said. "Sounds like a plan."
He stood and cupped his mouth.
"Hey, Mom, Dad we're going now."
Kate
Kate stood beside him and rubbed her chin.
"Who first?"
Zac
"Umm... Tay and Nat?" Zac suggested. "They live closer."
Kate
"Alright, sure."
Kate shrugged and waited for Zac to lead, as she didn't know where anything was in Tulsa.
Zac and Natalie
Not long thereafter, Natalie was greeting them at the door.
"Hey you two," she said. "Come on in."
"I noticed Ike's car outside," Zac commented. "He here too?"
"Yeah. Ike got inspired with a song and came here to work on it."
"And didn't invite me? I'm hurt."
Natalie gave him a look that clearly showed that she was not the slightest bit fooled by him and gave Kate a hug.
Kate
"Hey," Kate greeted, hugging Natalie back, careful of her very large stomach.
"Almost time?"
Zac, Natalie and Isaac
"In a couple of weeks," Natalie replied, smiling. "And I'm looking forward to it like you wouldn't believe."
Zac chuckled.
"Well, why don't you two have a seat, while I got harrass certaing brothers of mine. Music room I assume?"
"You assume correctly," Natalie replied.
Zac grinned and headed to the music room, where he flung open the door and stepped inside. Isaac was busy notating something.
"Hey Ikers."
"Ahh!"
Zac laughed.
Taylor
"Zac!" Taylor was ready to tell him off for interrupting from where he sat at the keyboard.
Zac and Isaac
Zac chuckled.
"C'mon," he said. "Kate and I have something to tell you. Something very important."
He nodded sagely and departed. Isaac rolled his eyes and started to get up, giving Taylor a look that clearly said "Okay, what's he doen this time?"
Taylor
"It can't be another baby, he's too insistant," Taylor looked confused, before leading the way out.
Zac and Isaac
Isaac chuckled as he followed Taylor out.
"Yeah, I think if it were another baby he'd be all tail between his legs, mention it really quickly in passing and change the subject straight away," he grinned.
Zac plonked down on the lounge next to Kate and watched as his brothers joined them.
Taylor
"So what's this about?" Taylor asked, joining Natalie.
Zac and Natalie
"Well," Zac said, taking Kate's hand. "Kate and I are getting married."
Silence.
"Umm... since when?" Natalie asked slowly.
"Yesterday."
Kate
Kate nodded, raiing her eyebrows slightly.
"It's... soon, we know."
Taylor
Taylor looked at Isaac with the 'here we go again' look.
"Well. We appreciate the forewarning this time," he said awkwardly.
Isaac and Zac
Isaac raised an eyebrow and looked at Zac expectantly.
"What?" Zac asked.
"I'm waiting for you to jump up and say 'April Fools!'"
"It's not a joke, Ike."
"That's what they all say."
Kate and Avery
"We possibly should've waited and told everyone tomorrow," Kate said, leaning back in her chair.
"I suspect this conversation is going to happen repeatedly."
~*~*~*~
Meanwhile, Avery had just arrived at Taylor and Natalie's house, as no interesting siblings were at Walker and Diana's.
She rang the bell.
Natalie and Zac
"Excuse me," Natalie said.
"I suspect you're right," she heard Zac say to Kate as she headed for the door.
"Oh hey Avery," Natalie greeted, opening the door. "Come on in."
Avery
"Hey Nat," Avery greeted cheerfully. "I've heard this is where all the cool Hanson's are."
Natalie
Natalie chuckled.
"Well, yes if by 'all the cool Hansons' you mean Taylor," Natalie joked. "Ike and Zac are also here."
She gestured towards the lounge room.
Avery
Avery grinned.
"I meant Tay and Ike," she joked back.
Natalie and Zac
Natalie chuckled.
"Hey Avie," Zac greeted. "I have awesome news. Kate and I are getting married."
Avery and Kate
Avery stared at Zac and Kate for a second, then grinned.
"Hey, congrats!"
"You believe us?" Kate asked cautiously.
Avery nodded. "Yep. Telepath, remember?"
Zac and Isaac
"Oh good. Convince him," Zac said pointing to Isaac.
Isaac gave Zac an amused smile.
Avery and Kate
"I don't need to be able to see Ike's mind to know that's not going to happen," Avery said to Zac. "Sorry, but this is probably payback for your douchey-ness about hsi marriage to Nikki."
Kate grinned faintly. "She's honest."
Avery snickered. "It's easier."
