Asking Permission, Part 1

Written by Nessa and Michelle

Liam

Liam took a deep breath before raising his hand and ringing the doorbell of Zac's house.

He could hardly believe that he was actually going to meet Tru's father. And under these circumstances. Hopefully they'd get along. Or things were going to be awkward.

Zac

There was a knock on the door and Ella poked her head in.

"Zac? There's someone at the door."

"Huh? Oh hi Ella," Zac said, turning off his music.

"Hi Zac. Someone at the door?"

"Oh right, okay. Cool. Thanks."

Ella smiled and departed while Zac got up from the keyboard. He headed downstairs and peered out the window before opening the door.

"Umm, hi?"

Liam

"Uh, hi," Liam replied, somewhat awkwardly.

"We've never met, but I'm Liam. I'm Tru's boyfriend."

Zac

Zac paused.

"Well, umm, hi Liam," he replied. "What brings you here?"

Liam

"Um, well..." Liam fidgetted nervously again.

"I have something to ask you."

Zac

"Okay, well, umm... did you want to come in, then?" Zac asked.

He paused then opened up the door. This was really weird.

Liam

"Yeah, thanks."

Liam hesitated for a moment, then stepped inside.

"Nice place," he commented.

Zac

"Hear that House? He likes you," Zac said.

Then he paused. Wow, that must sound really weird.

"Erm," he coughed. "It's a long story. Wanna seat?"

Liam

"Ah, yeah, Tru mentioned something about the house..."

Liam shook his head slightly.

"Yeah, thanks."

And with that, he sat across from Zac.

Zac

"Oh that's good. I don't seem completely insane then," Zac replied cheerfully.

Silence.

"So, ahh, what did you want to ask me?"

Liam

"Uh... well, I realise this is awkward, considering I have been seeing Tru for a year and we still haven't met... but uh... I wanted to ask for your blessing... to marry her."

Liam shrugged slightly.

Zac

Zac paused.

"Oh," he said.

Well, this was unexpected. But then, why else would Tru's boyfriend randomly show up at his house? Zac scratched his head, wondering whether he needed to do something... fatherly at the moment, then realised he should probably stop keeping Liam in suspense and actually say something more substancial than 'Oh'.

"Well..." Zac said finally. "I guess if Tru'll have you it's fine with me. You umm, studying too or have a job or something?"

Liam

"Uh, yeah, I work at a high school near where we're living," Liam told him.

"If it helps, you can call Faith for a reference? We seem to get along well?"

Zac

Zac nodded.

"I might do that."

He considered for a moment.

"But y'know I guess the real question is: do you love Tru?"

Liam

Liam nodded. "I do. I'm in love with her."

He smiled, almost shyly.

"She's... she's quite unlike anyone I've ever met, in some ways. Although, sometimes she and Faith are scarily similar. Like the same gestures and expressions. It's a little weird to see them together."

Zac

Zac grinned knowlingly.

"Okay, well, that's good enough for me," he said.

Liam

Liam breathed a sigh of relief.

"Well, that was a little easier than I thought it was going to be. Thank you."

Zac

Zac chuckled.

"I've dealt with the parent thing before too," he replied. "And I'd say the usual 'if you hurt her, I'll hurt you' line, but y'know, as you said, Tru's like her mother. She'd probably kick your ass herself."

Liam

Liam grinned.

"Yeah... not to mention what Faith would do to me. She's... scary."

Zac

"Just remember, you're the one choosing to marry her daughter," Zac nodded.

He paused.

"Just one thing... try not to make me a grandparent too soon, okay? I'm way too young to be a grandfather."

Liam

Liam chuckled.

"I'm sure Tru will want to be very careful when the time comes anyway. She has too many years of school she wants to finish before she has kids."

Zac

"Ahh yes school! Great it'll be years before I have to hear the 'G' word," Zac rubbed his hands together and grinned at Liam.

Well, provided Saku and Trina waited too.

Liam

Liam chuckled and stood up.

"Well, I should get going..."

Zac

"Oh, yeah sure," Zac said, standing up as well. "Umm... thanks for coming over and umm, introducing yourself."

Liam

"No worries."

Liam paused for a moment before heading for the door.

Zac

"Have a good trip back," Zac said.

He walked Liam to the door and shut it behind him. Then Zac leant against the wall and slid down to the floor. Well. That was unexpected.
