The Doodle Pad Never Lies

Written by Michelle

Zac

Zac exchanged the doodle pad by the phone for a new one and turned the original back to the beginning. He smiled and he his head in amusement at himself of the picture of Faith he had drawn.

Mildly curious he flipped through the pad, eyes flicking over the various pictures he had drawn. Cartoon family members, the odd speech bubble, some inanimate objects like planes, roses and CD turntables. Lots of pictures of Faith in various poses.

Zac snorted. Would he ever get over her? Lame.

The next page was after they had come back from the more recent tour, and he nearly flicked it over when he realised that the person he had absentmindedly sketched whilst on the phone was not Faith, but Kate.

Huh.

As he thumbed through the rest of the notepad he noticed a distinct lack of Faith pictures. In fact, there weren't any. There were, however, lots of pictures of Kate.

Well, he liked Kate. A lot. And they were dating. Why wouldn't he draw her?

And come to think about it, he hadn't really thought about Faith all that much lately. Zac frowned a little, trying to remember the last time he had given her much thought, and the only thing he could come up with was that Christmas lunch when Avery had mentioned Sam.

Zac put the doodle pad down slowly, his mind ticking over.

"Sam." he said aloud.

He paused.

"Faith."

His eyes flickered around the room trying to figure out what his reaction was to the name.

"Faith?" he tried again.

That familiar wistfulness he had taken to associating with Faith was gone. Sams' name didn't even make him wince any more. Zac swallowed.

"Kate."

Oh. Well, that explained it then. In explicable happiness at the sound of someone's name could only mean one thing.

Which was ridiculas of course, because they hadn't really known each other that long. Less than a year, even, and most of that was while on tour. There was absolutely no way he could be in love with Kate. The very idea was insane. They barely even knew each other.

Zac dropped the doodle pad in the bin on his way past, trying to fight the idea in his head. Yeah, okay he did like her. A lot. But he didn't really think he loved her. Okay, yes, it's true, Kate was pretty amazing. And pretty for that matter. Okay, no she was beautiful. But you know, she was also a model. So beauty was kind of in her area of expertise so of course she was beautiful. And funny. They got along great. And they weren't even having sex, which was novel for Zac to have a girlfriend he wasn't having sex with. Not that he had any inteioned... given his tendancy to have kids. But that was besides the point. Okay they'd only been dating since January. That was definitely not enough time to fall in love with someone. Not really. There was definitely a difference between infatuation and being in love.

Ah ha! That explained it. Clearly it was just a crush, nothing more and nothing less.

Relieved at his revelation, it did not occur to Zac that Kate was the first 'crush' he'd had that had actually taken his focus off Faith.
