Kate opened her eyes slowly, grappling for her phone on the bedside table.
"Hello?" she whispered.
"Happy birthday!" her mom chirped.
"Ugh," Kate moaned. "Thanks, Mom."
"Sorry, honey, too early?" her mother asked.
"Little bit. But it's ok. Thanks. Really."
Her mother chuckled. "Sorry, babe. Call me later, ok? Let me know how my little grandchild is going."
Kate smiled and shook her head slightly. "Will do. Love you."
