First Date

Written by Michelle and Nessa

Zac

Zac sat in the chair at their table in the restaurant, feeling a little awkward. Their food had been ordered, drinks had been delivered, and Zac found himself a little stumped for topic of conversation.

He looked over at Kate and gave a tentative smile.

Come to think of it, this was the first date Zac had been on in quite sometime. Perhaps that was why he was feeling so nervous.

Kate

Kate swirled the straw in her drink absently.

"So," she said, glancing up at Zac. "What's new?"

Zac

"Well..." Zac said slowly. "I went on this date with this cute girl I know."

Ahh yes, return of the bad jokes.

Kate

"Oh really?" Kate leaned back in her chair.

"And was that fun?"

Zac

"Absolutely," Zac nodded. "Except for all the awkward bits when we had nothing to talk about and I started making bad jokes."

He grinned at her.

Kate

"Yeah, if I were watching this in a movie, I'd skip that part."

Kate smiled back at him.

Zac

"Yeah, I know," Zac replied with mock woefullness. "It's a failing of mine, I'm sure."

He tapped his finger for a moment.

"So, uhh... what's your... favourite colour?"

Kate

"Yellow," Kate replied, nodding.

"And yours?"

Zac

"Blue," Zac answered cheerfully. "And together that makes green! Which is Ike's favourite colour. But that's not important."

He grinned at her.

Kate

Kate raised an eyebrow in amusement.

"I see."

Zac

"Yeah, I'm weird I know," Zac nodded. "Of course, you agreed to go out with me, so what does that make you?"

A cheeky expression lit up his still grinning face.

Kate

"Sympathetic?" Kate suggested.

"Someone who takes chances on charity cases?"

Zac

"Ahh sympathy!" Zac exclaimed. "This makes so much more sense now."

Their food took that moment to arrive.

Kate

"I thought I'd do my part by accepting a pity date with you," Kate teased.

She grinned faintly.

Zac

Zac chuckled and lifted his fork.

"So umm..." he said, stabbing at his dinner. "Yeah.... stuff."

Kate

"So, you're not touring at the moment?" Kate asked.

She took a sip of her drink.

Zac

"Nope," Zac replied. "Nat and Nikki are both due in April, so we figure we'll give them a chance to actually have their children, and then we'll make plans to tour again. What about you? How's your modelling going?"

Kate

"Good... kinda."

Kate took another sip of her drink.

"I've been putting it on hold until I finish school, only doing shoots and shows here and there when I haven't had too much school stuff to take care of. I'm planning to get into it again once I've graduated, but I also do want to work in finance. After all, it seems pointless to go to school for four years and not work in the area I studied. At least for a few months," she grinned.

Zac

Zac chuckled.

"Yeah, what else are all those school fees for anyway?" he grinned.

Kate

"Exactly," Kate said, nodding.

"Though, I did get a scholarship for a year, so that took the pressure off, ha."

Zac

"Ahh yes," Zac nodded. "It would at that."

He ate another mouthful of his dinner.

"So umm... Other than paint-ball," Zac grinned. "Whatcha do for fun?"

Kate

"Hmm," Kate said, thinking.

"Hanging out with friends, I guess. I haven't had much time for fun lately, with school being so busy. What about you?"

Zac

"Hmm, yes I understand," Zac nodded. "When I'm not busy with the band, I'm busy with kids. Although playing with the kids is kinda fun, especially, B'E, Tom and Dee Dee, 'cause they're old enough to stay playing with cool little kids toys. But when I have a spare moment, video games."

Kate

"Cool," Kate replied, nodding.

She ate some more of her meal.

"So, both Nikki and Nat are due around the same time?"

Zac

"Pretty much. I think Nikki's due in the beginning of April and Nat's due in late April," Zac replied. "Kinda funny how it worked out. Of course, now Ike's kid is probably going to gloat to Tay's kid about how he or she is two weeks older or whatever the difference turns out to be."

He chuckled.

Kate

Kate nodded, thoughtfully.

"It's hard to imagine Nat is going to be a mother of two. But then again, sometimes I still think of us as the nerdy freshman in high school."

Zac

Zac laughed.

"I have to say, I can't picture you as being a nerdy anything," he said.

Kate

"I don't look like the scholarly type?" Kate said, mock offended.

She grinned faintly.

Zac

"Oh no, you look smart," Zac nodded. "In more ways than one, I might add. But you don't look nerdy."

Kate

"I wear glasses, if that helps my nerd factor?"

Kate nodded.

Zac

Zac laughed.

"Okay well... then maybe I can picture you as a nerd. A cute nerd though."

Kate

"Aww, flatterer," Kate teased.

"How do you know I don't look horrible in my glasses?"

Zac

"You could never look horrible in anything," Zac nodded seriously. "You could be wearing a potato sack with shoes made of newspaper and soaked in mud and umm, umm, half your hair missing and you'd still be hot."

Kate

"I'll hold you to that," Kate grinned.

"Perhaps that will be my Halloween costume?"

Zac

Zac laughed.

"Calling my bluff huh? Not that I'm bluffing, by the way, because I really do think you look hot in anything but yeah."

Kate

Kate grinned.

"We'll see."
