Faith ran her finger across the shelf of the magic shop she and Sam were in, examining each of the jars and wrinkling her nose up occasionally at the labels.
A strange sound, almost like singing came from the back of the store, and Faith followed it, tilting her head slightly, curious and eager to see what was the cause.
An elderly Chinese man sat behind a counter, a cage with a curtain around it in front of him. The singing appeared to me coming from the cage, and the man was smiling, occasionally poking his finger through the bars of the cage and petting whatever was inside.
Sam
"Hey Faith, I got the Palo Santo-" Sam held up the wood, before turning to see that she wasn't there.
"Faith?"
Faith
"You like his singing?" the old man asked, eyes crinkling up in a friendly smile.
"What is he?" Faith questioned, her eyes focused on the cage.
The old man let out a laugh and lifted the curtain. "Mogwai."
Sam
Sam heard the talking, grabbed a few more odds and ends, and made his way to the counter.
"Faith?" he asked, smiling to the older man before his eyes fell on the cage.
Faith
Faith looked up at Sam, then returned her eyes to the cage.
"He is friendly, yes," the old man said, speaking with slightly broken English.
Sam
"What is it?" Sam asked with a smile, intrigued.
Faith
"A Mogwai," the old man replied. "He is in need of home."
Faith leaned a bit closer.
"You play with him?"
She shrugged slightly, and slipped her finger into the cage, grinning when the animal inside made a purring noise.
Sam
"He's cute," Sam grinned.
"Bit I really don't think Dean's car is the best place for a furry."
Faith
"There's my car," Faith said, looking up at Sam with wide eyes.
She grinned slightly.
Sam
"Faith..." Sam looked unsure.
"Do you really think this is a good idea? When are you going to have the time to look after it?"
Faith
"Hmm, that's true," Faith pouted.
"He not hard to look after," the old man piped up, seemingly intent on the pair taking the Mogwai from his hands. "No getting wet, no eating between midnight and sunrise, direct sunlight kill him."
The old man could see it was Sam he had to convince, so he opened the cage, letting the creature out, careful not to let him walk into the sunlight.
Sam
"No food between midnight and sunrise?" Sam looked confused.
"That's the only time we eat these days. And what do we do about a bath then?"
Faith
"He... like cat. Bathe himself," the old man replied.
Faith, meanwhile, was petting the Mogwai.
Sam
"What does he eat?" Sam asked.
Faith
"Anything, everything!" the old man chuckled.
The mogwai had walked over to the edge of the counter where Faith was, and was purring softly, before starting to sing for them again.
Sam
Realising he was fighting a losing battle, Sam placed the items he needed to buy onto the counter and pulled out his wallet.
"It's up to you Faith, I just hope you know what you're getting into," he relented.
Faith
Faith was silent, thinking it over as she scratched behind the Mogwai's ears.
"You take," the old man said, nodding. "If not right, you bring back."
She shrugged. "Why not, I could use some company in my car."
The Mogwai jumped happily on the bench, before letting out a squeak as he started to fall.
Faith's hands shot out and caught him before he could hit the ground.
Sam
"Just make sure you remember where this place is then," Sam told her, paying for his items and taking the full bag from the counter.
Faith
Faith put the Mogwai carefully back in his cage, and the old man covered it with the little curtain again.
"Thank you," he told her.
She smiled slightly. "Um... you're welcome. Thank you."
She lifted the cage gently and turned to Sam.
"So," she said as they headed out the door. "I somehow got roped into adopting a pet."
"Mooooogwaaaaiiii," the furry creature sang happily.
Sam
"Oh you did?" Sam mused.
"I remember it as you roping me in."
Faith
Faith grinned, then leant over to kiss Sam's cheek.
"Thanks, sugar daddy. I love you."
Sam
Sam smiled awkwardly, giving her a confused look before they got to the car.
"You're welcome."
He threw the bag into the back and got in.
Faith
Faith slid into the seat next to him, the Mogwai playing with her fingers.
"Aww. Gizmo."
