Those Three Words

Lorne and Faith

"You're awake?" Lorne asked softly.

Faith nodded, sitting up. "I feel wicked gross though."

"You didn't sleep well," Lorne said. "You were tossing and turning."

"Yeah. Bad dreams."

There was a slight awkward pause between them.

"Faith?"

"Yeah?"

"You know that I know, right?" Lorne watched her carefully.

"Yes." Faith frowned. "Know what?"

Lorne decided to try another tactic. "Why did you leave Zac?"

Faith laughed. "How much time have you got?"

"All the time in the world for you, pumpkin," Lorne replied gently.

Faith fiddled with the edge of the blanket for a moment, avoiding Lorne's eyes. "I make it seem like he wasn't... isn't a good guy. Coz he is. He's really great. But..."

She floundered for a second, not knowing how to explain it.

"I guess... I always waited to feel more, you know? I could tell he really cared about me, and I just... didn't. I cared, but not enough. And I just kept waiting to care more, to like him more, but it never happened and I started... I started..."

"You started thinking that maybe that was what love was like?" Lorne guessed.

Faith shrugged. "And then he proposed... and I thought... well... maybe I should just do it. But see... thing is? After it, I started caring about him less. I would patrol until early morning and crash on the couch, using the excuse that I didn't want to wake him. Just so I wouldn't have to share a bed with him."

She paused again.

"That's horrible, isn't it?"

Lorne shook his head. "No, it isn't."

Faith ran a hand through her hair. "It just... it never felt right, you know? And even now, when I see him, I know that I was right to end it."

Lorne was quiet for a moment, wondering how far he could push this openness. It was the first time she'd ever really opened up, and he didn't want her to close up on him now. Not when he knew he was close to getting her to realise something she was holding back.

"Do you believe you're capable of love?" he asked.

Faith shrugged. "I think... I think I'm too damaged for the fairytale, you know? There's not a Prince Charming, he doesn't ever swoop in and save the girl, and he certainly doesn't fall in love with her."

Lorne rested his hand on his knee, tapping absently.

"I don't think that's right. From what I've seen, there is a Prince Charming who swoops in and saves the girl. And as for the falling in love? Well, time will tell," he said.

Faith shook her head.

"Do you love Sam?" Lorne asked outright.

Faith's eyes widened. "Um. Wow. That's... abrupt. No. I don't know. No. No, I don't fall in love."

Lorne smirked slightly. "Honey, you may want to rethink that."
