Helpless

Written by Nessa

Faith, Angel and Wesley

Faith paused outside the door of Angel's apartment, hearing raised voices outside.

"Angel, you're not going to - " she began, opening the door.

"It's clear," Wesley said. "It's what's going to happen. It's what's happening now!"

Faith paused, standing in the doorway.

"It can't be," Angel replied, his voice firm. "You've got to be wrong."

"I've checked it against all my other volumes," Wesley told him. "It's very real."

"Well, there's gotta be some way around it." Angel folded his arms across his chest.

"Listen. Some prophecies are - are a bit dodgy. They're... they're mutable. Faith has thwarted them time and time again, but this is the Codex. There is nothing in it that does not come to pass," Wesley explained.

"Then you're reading it wrong."

"I wish to God I were!" Wesley snapped. "But it's very plain! Faith will face the Father, and she will die."

A tear slipped down Faith's cheek.

"Have you verified the text?" Angel's voice sounded desperate.

Faith laughed, almost hysterically, drawing attention to herself.

"So that's it, huh? What's the deal now? I mean, we have a whole school full of Slayers... will one of them step up?" Faith asked. "Will you adopt her as well, Angel?"

Angel reached out for her and she jerked her body away forcefully.

"Don't touch me!" she shouted, then seemed to calm down a little. "Were either of you going to tell me?"

"I... I was hoping I wouldn't have to," Wesley admitted quietly. "I was hoping there'd be a way around it."

Faith thought for a moment. "I have a way around it. I quit."

"It's not that simple," Angel replied gently.

"I'm making it that simple! I quit!" Faith snapped. "I resign, I- I'm fired, you can find someone else to stop the Father or whoever from taking over! How about you do it?"

"I'm not sure that anyone else can. All... all the signs indicate..." Wesley trailed off.

"The signs?" Faith grabbed the book out of Wesley's hands and threw it against the wall. "Read me the signs! Tell me my fortune! You're so useful, sitting here with all of your books! You're really A LOT OF HELP!"

Wesley looked towards the ground. "No, I... I don't suppose I am."

"I know this is hard," Angel spoke up.

Faith turned to him, eyes flashing in anger. "What do you know about this? You're NEVER GOING TO DIE!"

"You think I want anything to happen to you?" Angel shouted. "Do you think I could... we've just got to find a way - "

He reeled back, holding his eye.

"I did, remember? I quit. Pay attention."

Faith turned to leave.

"Faith, if the Father rises..." Wesley said.

"I don't care!" She took a deep breath. "I don't care. I'm 25 years old. I don't want to die."
