System Upgrades

Written by Nessa and AiMsTeR

Avery

Avery wrung her hands nervously, a little unsure if she was doing the right thing by coming back.

After all, it had taken awhile to even get the clearance to do so, so it didn't exactly help her think that she was doing the right thing.

But she felt like she was. A little.

"Avery Hanson?"

Avery looked up after hearing her name. "Yes?"

"You can go in now."

Christian

Christian stood on the other side of the door, wringing his hands.

He had no idea of who'd be there to see him - who'd be allowed to see him - that wouldn't just walk through the front doors.

The guard opened the door and he gave him a short smile, before walking through into the meeting room and sitting at his side of the windowed desk.

Avery

Avery took a deep breath as the guard opened the door. She had one hand on her belly absently as she walked in and took her seat on her side of the window.

"Hi," she said softly.

Christian

"Avery?" Christian's face twisted in confusion.

"...Wow. I barely recognise you."

Avery

Avery smiled slightly.

"Well, I don't know if that's good or bad, but I'm going to take it as good."

She tucked her hair behind her ears.

"How are you?"

Christian

"Good," Christian nodded, "very good actually. You?"

Avery

"Ready to pop any moment," Avery said, smiling and absently rubbing her belly.

"But you know... worth it in the end."

Christian

"I bet it will be," Christian nodded, then hesitated.

"So... while I miss the small talk, seeing as I don't get much of it, I'm guessing there's a reason behind your being here?"

Avery

"Yeah, I um... I was told that I was meant to try and break your shield again," Avery lied.

"Or rather, I'm here to check on my shield and give you an upgrade of your security system, if you want one. I perfected it."

Christian

Christian sighed.

"Go ahead," he shrugged.

His acting abilities had come pretty far while he'd been in here too...

Avery

"Don't mind if I do."

Avery let herself slide into Christian's mind and she felt around her shield for a few minutes.

"I do nice work," she said, more to herself than to him.

"Hmmmm."

Christian

"An you can go back and tell them exactly what you did last time. I've been co-operating and giving them intel all the way through this," Christian pointed out.

"Yet when it comes to Wayne? He's a brick wall."

Avery

"I wouldn't know," Avery replied, still feeling around. "I don't know him really. Or at all."

She reinforced her own shield and then started on the security system, pulling the old one out gently. She watched her telepathic energy swirl around itself, her eyes lighting up in the same golden colour.

"Tricky."

Christian

"Usually is," Christian amended, watching her.

Avery

Beads of sweat appeared on Avery's forehead as she guided everything into place.

"Not always," she replied.

She mimicked her actions with her hands, unconsciously.

Christian

"In my case I meant," Christian corrected.

"I've head that word a lot."

Avery

"Oh, well then, yeah."

Avery tilted her head a little, sliding the last piece into it's place. She let it glide back to it's resting place in Christian's mind, before working on the switches to activate it.

Christian

Christian sat in silence for a moment, knowing she needed to concentrate.

"Know if it's a girl or boy yet?" he raised an eyebrow.

Avery

"A boy," Avery said, smiling as she thought about it.

"Kind of... kind of like the name River."

She tweaked a few of the switches.

Christian

"River?" Christian rose an eyebrow.

"What kind of a name is that?"

Avery

"A pretty awesome one."

Avery finished tweaking the system, looking at her own for confirmation that it was done.

"All done."

Christian

Christian nodded.

"Whatever you say."

Avery

"Well, it's either that or Shepherd. But that's a bit too insane for me."

Avery pushed her chair back.

"This was sorta a waste of time. I couldn't break it again, so I'm not sure why I was asked to try."

Christian

"Maybe they figured because I'd let down some barriers the mental ones would come down too," Christian shrugged.

"Oh well. Sorry you wasted your time."

Avery

"That's ok, it's always nice to see old... acquaintances?"

Avery smiled faintly.

"I guess I'll see you the next time I have to try."

Christian

"Sure thing," Christian stood from his chair.

"Say hi to your bro for me."

Avery

"Will do."

Avery got out of her chair and went to the door to be let out.
