You Can Never Understand Me

Written by Nessa

Faith

Faith glanced over at the clock for the millionth time that night. It felt like time was dragging, and while Sam slept peacefully beside her, his steady breathing breaking the silence of the room, she was wide awake.

She gently lifted Sam's arm from around her waist and slid out from under the covers. She shivered lightly as her feet hit the hard carpeted floor, and she padded quietly across to the other bed, where she opened her bag and pulled out a pair of pants and a long sleeved shirt. Dressing quickly, she located a knife and a stake, then slipped her feet into her boots and silently slipped out of the motel.

The night air was cool on her face, and she pulled her jacket a little tighter around her body, walking fast in the direction of the woods, wanting to disappear from sight for just a moment.

She'd already patrolled that night, but she was restless. Something inside of her was screaming - howling - to be free, but she wasn't quite sure what it was.

Not you? Let me tell you something. Nobody knows what you are. Not even you, little Miss Seen-it-all. The Ascension isn't just my day. It's yours too. Your day to blossom, to show the world what a powerful girl you are. I think of what you've done, what I know you will do, no father could be prouder.

You little firecracker.

My mom used to call me that when I was little. Because I was always running around.

So you'll still need me there.

Always.

She broke out into a run, long dark hair flying out behind her as she dodged the low hanging branches. Feet barely skimmed the ground, the world blurred around her, eyes focused on the the distance, not knowing where she was going, but knowing what she was getting away from.

You can never understand me, unless you've seen those tears. But I'll always run away when you come around.
