Faith opened the door to the motel room carrying a large bag, which she set on the bed next to Sam.
"Ok, Pip... I have a newspaper, I have food, I have pain killers, I have candy and, I even have porn."
She nodded.
"Yeah, I'm a catch."
Sam
"You did't have to," Sam stared up at her with an amused smile.
Faith
Faith grinned and settled down next to him, careful not to jolt his wound.
"I know, but you're so cute when you're pathetic."
Sam
"Gee, thanks," Sam chortled, wrapping a hand around her waist.
"Tell me you ctually got something substancial for lunch. This watching what I eat thing? That's the pathetic part."
Faith
Faith grinned and leaned over, kissing him on the nose.
"Yeah, it's healthy, but it's tasty. Which is why I got you some candy. If you're a good boy, you can have it," she teased.
Sam
"I'm always a good boy," Sam looked indignant.
"Fighting the good fight, and... stuff."
Faith
"Oh yeah?"
Faith raised an eyebrow.
"And the other night with Kim... that was for the greater good?"
Sam
"Well yeah," Sam reasoned, "because I'd like to be alive long enough to continue the good fight."
Faith
"Mmm, what was that about, by the way?"
Faith cracked her neck slightly.
Sam
"The usual," Sam sighed, looking away.
"I'm not good enough for you. It can only end badly. I'll only end up hurting you. He's better suited. You're rightfully his. You know the drill."
Faith
"Really?"
Faith grinned.
"Sorry, that's probably not the right reaction... but you know. It's kinda hot. Two guys, fighting till the death over me."
She paused.
"It's my daydream, don't argue."
Sam
"Yeah well, any other time I would have kicked his ass," Sam said dejectedly.
"But no. I had to go get stabbed by some power-hungry lawyer."
Faith
"Awww."
Faith leaned over and kissed him.
"Well, ordinarily, Kim's a pretty nice guy... oh, well, I guess you haven't really seen that side of him."
She touched his cheek gently.
"Why are people always saying we're a bad fit?"
Sam
"I don't know," Sam looked sad suddenly as he took her hand and held it, still staring down at the bed.
"Because I honestly can't think of a better one. What, powers and powers can't mix or something?"
Faith
"Hey," Faith said, reaching out with her free hand and moving some hair from Sam's eyes.
"I think we just people by surprise. Even Angel pointed out to me that we're a weird mix together, just because we're different. But he didn't say it was a bad thing, just that we were unexpected. And we are. We know we're different. But that's why we work, you know?"
Sam
"Yeah I know," Sam said sullenly.
"Opposites attract and all that. But really, we're not that different. People just don't know about me what they know about you."
Faith
"They don't know as much about me as they think they do," Faith told him.
She smiled slightly.
"In fact, apart from Angel... you probably know the most. And even you don't know everything."
Sam
"And likewise," Sam agreed, his train of thought changing suddenly.
"I can't believe I trusted Wesley."
Faith
"Yeah," Faith said wryly. "I could've warned you of the dangers of that."
She sat back, quietly thoughtful.
Sam
"You could have if I'd actually spoken to you once in a while," Sam mentally berrated himself.
Faith
"Don't beat yourself up about it," Faith told him, shaking her head. "Even I was starting to trust him again, after he... after everything."
She shrugged.
"Happens. Sometimes people are just... not what they'd seem. We're lifesize examples of that."
Sam
"Yeah I guess," he glanced up at her, giving her hand a short squeeze.
"So... about that candy..."
Faith
"Lunch first, kiddo."
Faith moved out of Sam's grip so she could grab the bag of food she'd brought with her.
"Then I'll decide if you've been good enough."
Sam
Sam huffed childishly.
"Fine."
