Amber had been invited to a party. She had been anxious after the move to meet some other Daths and Sems, even mutants, that she could be friends with. Amber didn't mind being friends with humans, but she hated lying to them. What kind of friend was she, if she was always lying to her friends?
It was a very clean-cut, adult dinner. While there were alcoholic and kerosine beverages available, it was more of an upper class event than a wild, rampaging party.
Yet... despite the good opportunity it was to meet new people, Amber still found herself sitting alone. Everyone seemed to know everyone else already, and while she knew she should go up and say 'hi' and introduce herself, there were so many groups, Amber felt overwhelmed. Luckily, she didn't have to decide. A girl with the blackest hair Amber had ever seen (if you can get blacker than black) plopped herself down on the chair next to her.
"Hi!" she said. "I'm Trina. Who are you?"
"Amber."
"Haven't seen you are before."
"I just moved here."
"Oh, that explains it," Trina nodded. "So, mutant or alien?"
"Alien. I'm a Dath."
"Cool. I'm a mutant, y'know in case you couldn't tell by the firey-red eyes," Trina grinned. "I'm pyrokinetic."
"Awesome," Amber replied.
"What about you? Power?"
"Atom manipulation."
"Yeah, I know that's the common one. What's your specialty?"
Amber looked uncomfortable. This would be the downside of having Daths, Sems and mutants for friends. That question always came up.
"I don't have one."
"Oh really?" Trina said sympathetically. "That sucks. But I bet you're awesome with the atomising, huh?"
"Yeah, I am actually," Amber replied, brightened by Trina's response - no one had ever brushed off Amber's admission with such optomisim before.
"Coolness. Okay, now were you plannin on sitting at this table by yourself all evening?"
Amber looked down.
"Well, I had kinda hoped to meet some new people. But I'm not good with meeting new people."
"That's okay," Trina said cheerfully. "I'll help. Come with!"
Trina took Amber's arm and stood up. Slowly, Amber also stood.
"Okay," she said.
"Right! This way."
And Trina proceeded to escort Amber around the room, introducing her to anybody and everybody, making jokes about them - usually right to their face too. Everyone seemed used to this kind of behaviour from Trina, and only a few people seemed annoyed with her.
Before the night was over, Amber and Trina has become fast friends.
