Gambit was enjoying a nice game of cards when a woman walked into the bar.
Normally this wasn't all the significant - there were lots of women walking in and out of the bar. But there was something eeriliy familiar about this particular woman.
"I fold," he said.
He laid down his card and stood up to follow her. She slipped into the back, where Gambit was certain that she didn't belong.
He followed her as she made her way up the stairs, all the while getting a stronger feeling that he knew exactly who she was. She left the stairs disappeared from view for a moment when Gambit finished the climb and then had to figure out which way down the hall she had gone. He was quick to make a decision, though, based more on instinct than any real idea.
His gut feel was rewarded when he heard the door of Johnny's room close. He quickened his pace and put his hand on the handle. If it was locked, he was prepared to break down the door, but it didn't come to that. He entered.
"Ahh, Gambit!" Johnny exclaimed. "I didn't expect to see you here."
Gambit met eyes with the woman.
"You have an assassin in this room, Johnny," he said calmly, not looking away from her.
"Oh? And how would you know that?"
"She's my ex-wife."
The woman chuckled, and made herself comfortable on the lounge. Very comfortable.
"Oh really?" Johnny mused. "Well, that is rather a co-incidence, isn't it? I just hired her, you see."
Gambit spared a glance to Johnny.
"Well," he said. "You paid for the best then. Good day."
With one last look at her, Gambit left. He was almost back at the stairs when:
"Remy?"
Gambit turned.
"Belle."
"It's been a long time, hasn't it?"
"Very."
Silence.
"Look, Remy, I didn't mean for it to get out of hand. I had no idea that's what Julien was going to do, and I certainly didn't... I mean running you out of New Orleans and... that shouldn't have happened."
Gambit shook his head.
"Oh, I'd agree with you on that score," he said. "But, let's be honest, our marriage would never had united our guilds. They've always been at war, they always will be at war, and they will always look for excuses to continue that war. Like it or not, Julien was just looking for another excuse -"
"Julien was looking out for me."
"And why didn't he like me? Because I was a member of the guild that his guild has been warring against. Face it, we never would have worked out, and you certainly couldn't have changed a single thing that happened."
Gambit turned.
"Good day, Bella Donna."
Her voice floated after him as he went down the stairs:
"Good day, Remy."
