Avery turned over and glanced at the clock.
6am.
She yawned, blinking in the early rays of light that were streaming through her curtains, then glanced down at Jade who was snug in her little box, snoring happily.
"Mmmm," she groaned, rolling out of bed and rubbing her eyes as she stood. She yawned again and grabbed her dressing gown, slipping into her slippers as she padded out of her room.
Careful not to wake anyone, Avery tiptoed down the stairs to the rec room. She opened the door, then closed it behind her and placed a few pillows on the floor, around the couch, building a fort like she used to when she was a kid. She threw a blanket over the top for a roof, then crawled in and lay down , resting her hands on her stomach.
A Grandmaster.
What did that mean, really? She supposed it just meant she'd have more grasp over her power, and... well, more power. In a way, she was sort of used to that. She's always had more power than other telepaths her age, and even some older than her. It would just mean... more. Like, the title.
Ga'Revali Grandmaster.
It was a bit intimidating. What if she was expected to know more than she did? What if she was expected to DO more than she did? She didn't mean like saving the world or anything, but do what Tanya did. Become a YIRAAS agent, get into the thick of it and all that. Avie was only a kid, she didn't know what she wanted to be when she grew up, but right now, she didn't like her new options.
It wasn't that she didn't want to make a difference, it was just that she felt as if she'd done enough. Hadn't she rid them of the Eye? Of course she wasn't so naive as to think that he was the only "bad guy" and there'd be no others, but she'd never really considered working for the YIRAAS at all. Or ridding the world of the bad guys. She just wanted to relax. Have a non stress job, although she guessed that was kind of redundant because every job was going to come with a some amount of stress - be it big or small.
She was going to tell her family, they'd want to know and they had the right to know. Her parents would be proud, she supposed. She was probably the youngest Grandmaster, and indeed the ONLY Grandmaster for at least... well, they had become fabled, so awhile.
Would people look at her differently, now that she WAS a Grandmaster? Would they be scared? Would they be impressed? Or angry? Or jealous? It was going to open up a lot of new feelings both from herself, and towards her from other people. Of course, she wasn't going to tell everyone, but it would probably go around the Dath and Sem community, if not announced - which she doubted - it would probably become somewhat of a rumour.
Avery wasn't even sure how she was going to tell people. Like, "Hey, funny story, I'm a Grandmaster". It wasn't really that she didn't have the words, more that they'd fail her emotions. She felt so much about her new situation, things that she couldn't express in words. The enormity of her fear, her excitement, her sadness... everything. No one would really every understand that, partly because not everyone was telepathic or empathic, but mostly because no one was her.
A Grandmaster.
Avie gingerly touched her bellybutton ring, wincing as it caught on her pyjamas. She set a block up in her mind to stop her thinking about the pain and that helped ease it slightly.
Like that.
She frowned and wondered if any other telepath could do that. Just shut off the pain centre of the brain while something was still fresh. Could any run of the mill telepath just decide they didn't want a sore toe, for instance, and just block off thinking about it? Or was it a skill that only SHE had because she was a Grandmaster.
It was the thoughts like these, the questions that no one had the answers for, that had been driving Avie crazy since the day before when she'd actually been given the news.
It was all too confusing.
Avery rolled onto her side and closed her eyes, breathing deeply through her nose as she thought about her situation.
Grandmaster.
How crazy.
