Miette arrived at Duke's school to pick him up. She was going to be taking her little brother out to the theatre tonight, partly as a treat, and partly to give her mother a break.
Rowena had tried - and was still trying - to stop Duke from being bullied, and was now seriously considering transferring him to another school. This in mind, Miette decided to do a little play acting of her own.
She pulled up at the school in her brand new sports car (working for Royalty has its advantages). She shone a little light around herself, letting it change colour occasionally to match her surroundings, or reflect her 'mood'. It was only faint - enough to be noticed, not enough to be alarming.
Miette, dressed quite proffessionally, stepped up to the admin building. As everyone was in classes at the moment there wasn't very many people around to notice. She'd change that.
"Hi," she said. "I'm here to pick up Duke Braddock."
The secretary looked up and over Miette.
"You're his mother?" she questioned uncertainly.
"Nope, I'm his sister," Miette replied, handing over a piece of paper, warm from the extra heat that Miette tended to generate. "This is from his mother."
The secretary looked over the note, asked for some ID (school policy, she said), and then looked up Duke on the computer to check where his schedule said he should be right now. The answer was what Miette knew it would be - drama. She'd planned it that way.
Miette followed the instructions the secretary had given her, along with a pass she was supposed to provide to the teacher and soon was at the drama classroom. She opened the door and let herself in. In the dark room, with her light shining, she certainly made an entrance!
Duke grinned to himself when Miette arrived, wishing he could make an entrance like that, but proud of his sister for being able to capture the room as she did.
"Can I help you?" the teacher asked, his voice carrying well above the students verbal reaction.
"I'm here to pick up my brother," Miette replied regally, and flicking the pass forward in two fingers as if it were beneath her to hold such a thing.
"We're in the middle of a class here," he frowned, not liking it when his class was disrupted, let along to let a student out early!
Miette gave him a condesending look.
"Now really," she said. "Do you honestly think that I would disrupt my brother's education? This is the last class of the day is it not?"
"Well, yes but -"
"My brother does far more drama classes in a week than are conducted at this school. Now, if you are going to continue to be a hinderance, I will take it up with your superior," Miette replied, making her light shine a dark red.
There was a murmer across the room, and Duke heard someone say 'mutant'.
Scrowling, the teacher asked who her brother was, taking the pass from Miette. He read the name just as she announced it: "Duke Braddock."
There was another murmer as the teacher looked up, an unreadable expression on his face.
"Duke. Get down here," he commanded.
Duke stood and started moving down past his classmates to Miette.
"Hi Mi!" he said cheerfully.
Miette made her light shine happier colours.
"Hi Duke," then she looked at the teacher. "I trust everything's in order?"
"Indeed."
"Then I shall no further disrupt your class," she said.
She and Duke then turned and walked out of the classroom. The moment the door was closed Duke cracked up laughing.
"That was brilliant!" he said. "I've never seen him act like that! Ha! Awesome!"
Miette grinned.
"Glad you got such a kick out of it."
"It was marvellous. Are you sure you don't want to get into theatre?"
"Drama is your niche, not mine. I do much better with numbers."
"Well, you have a sense of the theatrical," Duke rubbed his hands together. "I wonder what everyone will say to me tomorrow."
