Almost

Duke

Duke and Robyn were playing the playstation. As was their favourite shared pastime.

"Yes!" Duke exulted, pumping his fist in the air.

"Not so fast, big boy," Robyn said smugly as her avater slipped in at the last minute, beating Duke's after all.

"Hey... how the... you suck."

Robyn giggled.

"I won! I won!" she sang.

"Okay 'cause I let you."

"Yeah, yeah, sure, sure."

"See? You admit it."

"Idiot."

Duke grinned charmingly at her. Robyn poked her tongue out at him.

"Sore loser."

"Loser."

"At least I'm not a sore one who even denies he's lost when the evidence is there for all to see."

"Oh yeah, well, well, I make more money than you. So I can just buy a victory. So there."

"But then I'll have more money than you. Because clearly I'm the one you'll have to pay off. So there."

"Yeah but then you'll have to buy a victory back, so you'll give me my money back and everything will go back to how it was. Ha!"

"Except I'll make a profit because I won't give you all of your money back. Ner."

"I wouldn't give you a victory for anything less than all the money I paid you in the first place."

"Well, then I'll still win because this is a dumb game and you'll have paid me money to lose. And money lasts longer. So ha!"

One would think that after all this time, the two would have moved beyond petty bickering. But no, it would seem that petty bickering was also one of their favourite pastimes. Or more to the point, bickering with each other.

Duke had no problem admitting it. He liked Robyn. A lot. He liked the sad little pout she would pull, and the way her eyes would flash when she was mad. He thought that she was pretty and certainly the most fun girl he had ever met.

Absently he leant forward and there was a brief silence as they both looked at each other, Duke seriously contemplating what it would be like to kiss her.

Abruptly he pulled away.

"Another game?" he asked.

"Sure," Robyn replied.

"Wuss," Duke berated himself.
