Trying to keep from breaking

Leroy and Tanya

Tanya opened the door to see Leroy standing there, bonquet of flowers in hand.

"Peace offering?" Leroy said hopefully.

Tanya looked at him for a moment, then smiled, accepted the flowers and let him in.

"Tanya, I... I don't like fighting with you," he said as she looked for a vase to put the flowers in. "We became friends at a time where finding true friends is nearly impossible at best. And we have a son together. I'd really like to keep your friendship."

Tanya, finding a vase, put the flowers in, along with some water.

"I'd like that too," Tanya replied. "But you went checking up on me. That doesn't exactly ring of trust to me."

"You're right," Leroy admitted. "I find it very difficult to trust you when it comes to Christian."

Tanya met his eyes.

"So?" she demanded. "That's no excuse. We're entitled to differences of opinion."

"It's one thing to have a difference of opinion. It's another to act on it. You're going to get yourself in huge trouble if anyone can get proof that Christian's been visiting you, while pretending to be Taylor, without reporting it."

Silence. Tanya noticed that this time Leroy spoke of proof.

"Is that a threat?" she asked cooly.

"It's a warning. And it's the truth," Leroy replied. "You know what else is the truth? I'm not going to be able to bail you out, if that happens. You'll be on your own."

"So what else is new?"

"Tanya... please..."

"Leroy, this isn't about Christian. This is about you and I, and being able to trust each other."

Leroy sighed.

"And what would you have me do?"

"Stop Tad from reporting to you for one thing," Tanya replied. "Although, with any luck I'll be rid of that... him soon."

"Why is Tad there anyway?"

"You mean he hasn't told you?" Tanya was genuinely suprised. "Huh. Well, I think you'll just have to trust me when I say there's a good, yet unavoidable reason for it."

"Tanya - "

"Consider it an excecise in trust."

"Tanya, have you considered that if I tell Tad not to report back to me any more, he may just go to someone else?"

Tanya patted Leroy on the shoulder.

"You're a smart man," she said. "I don't care how you do it, but make him stop invading the Hanson's privacy. That's not why he's there."

"Tanya -"

"I'm trusting you to make this right."

"Tanya, please. Christian needs to be brought in."

"Leroy, darling, I have no way of contacting him. I can't just set him up. Assuming I could be persuaded to do so."

"What about the Hansons?"

"I can contact them any time."

"No... do they have contact with Christian?"

"If you mean are they able to contact him, probably not. He probably goes to them. Assuming your reports are accurate. I believe Isaac is a sci-fi writer. Maybe they were talking about plot ideas."

Leroy raised an eyebrow. Tanya matched his gaze.

"Eavesdropping," Tanya went on. "Very inarracurate at the best of times. Is Tad sure he heard what he heard?"

"Ahh, Tanya. You always knew how to put spins on these things. Unfortunately, I can't let this drop."

"You should have never gotten into it in the first place."

Leroy shrugged, reached in his pocket and pulled out a disk.

"You might want to see this," he said. "A couple of reports I got recently about Christian - not from Tad, another source."

Mildly curious, Tanya took the disk and plugged it into her computer. Up on the screen came the files of those that Christian had killed in the last couple of days.

"These guys had death warrents," she said. "Looks like he's been doing us a favour."

"Read into them, Tanya," Leroy advised. "Maybe the YIRAAS can overlook who died... but can they overlook how? He needs rehabilitation. I know you want the YIRAAS to accept him, but that's the only way they ever will - and one day that door will close."
