Clash of Powers

Written by Michelle and Joy

Mia

Draagan watched the newlywed couple from afar. His advanced sight made it possible for him to see things from a distance no ordinary Sem could.

Max and Liz were indulging in a paddle boat ride. They had managed to become friends with that mutant girl who ruled this country, Genovia. Mia or something. Who cares? In any case, this made for a fantastic opportunity to take out the usurper Max. That wasn't even a Sem name. And what was he thinking, marrying a human? Pah!

Draagan lined up his shot with his rifle. He wasn't going to get a second chance - the timing had to be perfect. He needed to take out Max, and preferably Liz as well (just in case she had conceived in the first few days of their marriage). Draagan often wondered why they took so long getting to killing off the last of the uspuring Royal family. Part of the delay was legitimate - no one realised at first there were children, and then they had to actually track them down. Well, no doubt the higherups had their reasons for waiting.

The passangers on the paddleboat came into view. Max had healing - that meant that he had to get a mortal shot, else his power would just kick in and it would be wasted effort. Unless... unless his healing was focused elsewhere...

Draagan aimed for Liz.

Liz jolted, a sharp pain in her shoulder. She looked down, blood already seeping from the wound.

"Liz!" Max exclaimed, instantly closing the distance between them.

"Max?" Liz sounded confused.

Max's hand covered the wound and he immeditately started to heal it.

Meanwhile, back on shore, Draagon was cursing. He was lining up his shot for Max when suddenly the whole ship became... blurred. It was insane! He knew it was there, but he simply couldn't make it out clearly. He took the shot anyway, but realised that the shot could have easily missed. How the heck could that have happened?

He started packing up quickly - after all, there was local royalty on board and he had no desire to contend with local security. Even if he could escape just fine.

"Is she going to be okay?" asked, Mia, deeply concerned.

Max nodded barely. When at last he pulled away, Liz took in the excess blood on her clothes and Max's hand and cried. Why was she always getting shot?

Reggie coughed behind Mia and she turned around.

"If I could have a word?" he murmered.

Mia nodded and they moved away from the couple.

"There was a second shot," Reggie said, pointing to the cabin wall.

Mia looked at the lodged bullet with alarm.

"But that's not the interesting thing... Mia... you know my power?"

"Power shield, yes," Mia nodded. "That's how you were able to get through to me when no one else could."

Lord Reginald nodded.

"Mia... I think your power can do more than simply make yourself obscure."

"Oh?"

"I have no way of confirming this of course," Regiie went on softly, "but I would suggest that you've made the paddle boat obscure - and preventing the sniper from making an accurate second shot."

"I... what? Obscuring the paddle boat?" Mia looked around, as if expecting to see something.

"Yes. If I've sensed things properly, then it came up the moment we heard the shot."

Mia chewed her lip.

"Well, it's a nice extra facet of my power if that's the case. Hell of a way to find out about it though."

"Indeed."
