Mia had granted the YIRAAS some land in Genovia onwhich to build a club that would act as camoflague for their Genovian HQ. The club itself was still in the process of being build, but the underground level where the teleportation amplifier would be was finished.
She was, at this moment, visiting the site.
"What happened?" she asked.
"The amphlifier was out by...oh 2 millimetres," said an old man in hearing distance. "Big boomy explosion. Teleporter in seriously bad shape. Just enough to detsory the whole thing and have to start from scratch. Minor damage to the Houston amplifier... should be fixed within the week. But they'll have to make another one for Genovia from scratch."
"Wow... I had no idea."
"Most people don't. Only the technitions and teleporters involve understand the true risks involved. The person who invented the dratted things should be shot for inefficiency. But shot somewhere like the leg, so they have a chance of improving upon the design to make it a bit more user friendly."
Mia giggled a little, but tried to avoid doing so too loudly - not wanting to upset anyone.
"You're the little Princess, aren't you? Carl Wallace is the name," and he held out his hand.
Mia smiled and nodded.
"Just call me Mia," she said.
"In that case, you can call me Caz. That's what my buddles called me back... oh back when we were about your age. How old are you?"
"Seventeen."
"Seventeen," Carl nodded. "Yes... that's how old I was when the colony ship crashed."
"You were on the colony ship?"
"That's what I said, wasn't it? Yes. After the crash, everyone had to plit up and go our separate ways. Well, me and my buddies went travelling, under the guise of looking for somewhere to settle. But in all honestly, we were more interested in exploring. Along the way we met up with others. and then alien hunters started showing up and you can imagine the fun we had dealing with them," Carl nodded reminisingly. "Of course, that was before they started getting organised and knew what they were upgainst, the little sods. But anyway. Helped our people along the way. Sometimes just with general knowledge. Before we knew it, we'd become a sort of vigilante group."
Mia grinned.
"Fun," she said.
"Indeed," Carl agreed. "Of course, before we knew it, we were also helping our people to keep in contact with each other. Decided to start a little directory, and then one of us got it into their heads to start a newsletter. Well, we were trying to come up with a name for it, and I... jokingly suggested "Yes, I'm Really An Alien Society". And they decided they liked it.
Carl chuckled to himself.
Mia smiled, wondering if the story she was hearing was even true. Because if it was... he was one of the original founder of YIRAAS.
"Oh, it's true all right, deary," Carl said, grinning.
Mia gave him a startled look.
"Sorry darl, I'm a telepath. My blocking abilities aren't what they used to be and I tend to hear people's thoughts a lot more than I intend to. I was once the most powerful telepath on the planet... and now Tanya is. Hopefully she can improve on the design of these blasted amplifiers. Or maybe that girl she's teaching will. Tanya thinking she could be even more powerful than either of us. I should have another 30 years left... ought to be plenty of time to find out."
"If you... if you founded the YIRAAS... what are you doing now?"
"Well... after YIRAAS formed a council, I decided I had better things to do than sit around all day making decisions. So I decided to teach instead. They tried to con me into security, but I have always maintained that if you have good teachers you dont' need security."
"What if the students don't listen?"
"Well, between the students that don't listen and the tecahers how can't teach - why else do you think we need so much security?"
Mia giggled.
"I'm retired now. Tanya's taking on teaching high level telepaths, which is fine my me. Even if no one else will care to say it to my face, I know my powers as not what they used to be. Besides," and Carl grinned pomposly. "I have done so much for aliens on Earth already, it's about time I got my well deserved break."
"Mia! I didn't know you were here," called someone.
"So what else is new?" Mia joked.
"Say, I have to say, it's a good idea of yours, to create that Mutant society. Make great camoflague for our own YIRAAS memberships."
Mia smiled.
"Thanks you."
"Eh? What Mutant society?" Carl asked.
"Well, the only difference between humans and mutants is the existence of powers. So... that means there are probably mutant crooks out there," Mia said. "I decided I need to start someone to... to police the use of mutant powers, as it were, and I decided to start this Mutant society. Its very foundation is going to be high ethical standards, and membership will be invitation only. But I'm not going to limit their activities to just policing powers. At the end of the day, I want it to be more a community group, rather than a security force."
Carl nodded.
"Sounds interesting."
"I just hope it works. I would hate for it to end up going corrupt despite all this hard work I'm going to to see that it doesn't."
Carl shrugged.
"You can only try."
