Tracking down the Zac

Written by Nessa and Michelle

Faith

Faith wandered around the corner and watched Zac.

He hadn't been hard to find.

She was a natural born tracker, and did hunt things for a living... well, that, and he was famous. When in doubt, all she had to do was read the paper and she was told where he was.

Faith walked up behind him and coughed slightly.

"Zac."

Zac

Zac stood stock still for a moment, then turned slowly around on his heel.

"Faith," he said evenly, if quietly.

Well, she was certainly the last person he expected to see.

Faith

"I bet I'm the last person you wanted to see," Faith said softly.

She stepped forward and gave a half smile.

"I'll understand if you hit me and then walk away, but I was wondering if we could talk."

Zac

Zac was silent for a long moment.

"As long as talking doesn't involve you confessing your undying love or something," he said at last. "I don't think my heart could survive another stomping."

Faith

Faith nodded.

"I just... I'm sorry. You didn't deserve what I did to you, and I wish I could take it back, btu I can't, and it's done. Look, I just have to tell you something, then I'll be out of your life. Can we go somewhere?"

Zac

Zac shrugged.

"Yeah, okay," he said. "There's a coffee shop around the corner."

He wondered what this was all about.

Faith

They walked to the coffee shop and ordered, then sat down.

Faith stirred her coffee absently, staring intently into the mug.

"Ok, so I'll just... I'll just go for it."

She took a deep breath.

"So you know me, and you know that I'm pretty easy going, so not getting my period didn't bother me. And it wasn't unusual. I've been in so many fights and had injuries in my pelvis that I've been irregular for years. So when I didn't get my period for a bit, I didn't notice really. So, this makes me sound like some dizzy blonde, but I started to put on weight, and it confused me, coz I train and stuff... so I went to the doctor and well, it turns out that I'm four months pregnant, and I traced back the time and it turns out your the father."

Faith panted for breath.

"I didn't come and tell you because I wanted you to help me, or like I wanted something from this, I just thought you had the right to know."

Zac

Zac was quiet for a moment.

"So should I apologise, or congratulate you?" Zac replied softly. "And for that matter, do you really think that you can just tell me that without my wanted to be a part of my child's life?"

Funny,of all the women he would have chosen to get pregnant... a few months ago he would have been ecstatic.

Faith

"I'm not saying don't be involved... I just... if you don't want to be, then it's ok."

Faith sighed.

Zac

"Faith, I always want to be involved in the lives of my kids," Zac responded. "I mean, who knows why, I probably have too many of them, but I do. The question is... do you want me to be involved? Or are you going to avoid me, and things be awkward? You left me, not I you."

He should have known they could never have a clean break. Every time they broke up, something always happened.

Faith

"I didn't want to make you feel like you had to be involved," Faith said slowly.

"But I would like you too."

Zac

Zac nodded slowly.

"Okay," he said. "Good."

Silence.

"So, I suppose, at four months, you're due in November?"

Faith

"Yeah... but... Gunn's looking into dimensions where time goes faster... being pregnant makes me a bit vulnerable," Faith said softly.

"So."

Zac

"You have a thing for fast pregnancies huh?" Zac mused. "Airlia was what? Less than a week? Have you found out what that was all about yet?"

He took a sip of his drink.

Faith

"A present from Wolfram and Hart... evil lawfirm. I get the impression she's gonna play some sort of part in an apocalypse. So that should be exciting."

Faith rolled her eyes.

"How's Saku?"

Zac

"Saku is good," Zac replied. "But he's getting a little mischevious these days. He'll be all cute and innocence one minute and then the next - wham! He's made like Houdini and escaped, and the next time you see him, he's a cat in the arms of some Hanson fan who's giving him all this pampering..."

Zac shook his head.

"That kid is gonna be a heart-breaker when he grows up, mark my words. But as far as I know he's not the star of his own apocalypse."

Faith

"Lucky you," Faith said dryly.

"Hopefully nothing strange will happen with... with our kid."

Faith paused, smiling, despite how weird the words sounded.

"Won't be long... I really don't like being pregnant. I can't fight. I can't wear leather pants. It's all bad. The sooner I deliver, the better, I think."

Zac

Zac grinned.

"Did you ever consider... our skin is a form of leather?" he asked cheekily.

Faith

"No, and yet, now that you've told me, I'm still not inspired to rip my clothes off."

Faith smiled slightly.

"So... yeah. Well, I should probably head off, stop wasting your time."

Zac

Zac laughed, and stood up.

"Well, I guess I'll talk to you later then. You still have my number and address..." he trailed off uncertainly.

Faith

Faith stood and punched Zac's arm lightly.

"Hey, we can still be friends, if you can handle seeing me."

Zac

"Yeah... that would be good," Zac nodded. "But don't make me fall in love with you again."

He gave her a mock-stern look.

Faith

Faith laughed.

"I don't know what I did to make you in the first place, but I'll try not to do it again."

She stood up.

"I'll see ya round, nearer to due date, I guess."

Zac

Zac nodded.

"Okay," he said. "Talk to you then."

Faith

Faith smiled and left.
