27 May 2004 - Pioneers of emerging industry

Isaac and Yvette

Isaac wandered into a bookshop on the station. There was a growing section for alien publications, and naturally Isaac wandered over to it, just wanting to see what it looked like to his books, his name, in the shop.

Well, sort of his name.

Considering he was writing under a psudonym.

He didn't quite know why he was so reluctant to admit he was the one writing these novels, he only knew he was.

"Ooof!"

Someone had turned the corner and knocked right into him.

"Oh sorry," Yvette said.

"S'okay," Isaac replied. "Hey you're... Yvette, right?"

"Yep, and you're Isaac?" Yvette smiled.

"Yah. So we have met before."

"Indeed. Come to see what's new, huh?"

"Yeah," Isaac nodded, gesturing to the shelf. "I think it's really cool just how fast this is booming."

"Very fast. I guess there were a lot of people writing behind YIRAAS's back, huh?"

"Yep. I wonder how long it's going to take before the industry starts getting more competitive. Right now it's a novelty, so everyone's jumping in, but sooner or later..."

"Yeah, I know what you mean. Same thing's being predicted for the movie and TV industry on the station. Right now we have one channel with main news and general interest stuff. They haven't even got all the timeslots filled yet. But there's a couple of movies being worked on, and when the first one comes out... well, you know there's going to be a bombardment of people trying to get in. And it won't be long before we have more than one channel either, I'm sure."

Isaac nodded.

"Yeah, someone'll start creating TV shows. I just hope it doesn't do crazy, like it does on Earth, with different channels putting out variations of the same show."

"Ugh, yes. I hate that. Plus, reality tv? Written by writers not smart enough to make movies."

Isaac laughed.

"I wonder when the first movie is coming out?" He mused.

"Next month," Yvette replied. "But, shhh, don't tell anyone I told you. It's not advertised yet."

"Ahh," Isaac nodded. "Thanks for the heads up."

"I'm just excited, because I'm in it."

"Oh I see. Well, good luck to you."

"Thanks."

"Wow, that would make you one of the pioneers of the alien movie industry, huh?"

"I guess. Never really thought of it like that."

Isaac grinned.

"Well, if you look at human history... if your next few projects are successful, you'll probably be regarded as some kind of legend. Okay see, Elvis? Talent aside, part of what makes him a legend is that he was amongst the first to break into that area."

Yvette raised an eyebrow.

"Okay, so what? You're telling me I'm going to be the next Elvis? I don't think so."

"Well, you know what I mean, right?"

"Yeah, I think so."

"Sorry, I've had a lot of time to think about it. I ahh," Isaac hesitated, then figured to go on a tell her, "I'm one of these writers you see."

"Oooh, really?" Yvette asked.

"I use a psudonym, though. H I Clarke."

"How cute. Wait... wasn't that one of the first writers? I remember there were four stories that came out..."

"Yeah, one of them was mine. Actually... you know Oliver, right?"

Yvette hesitated, then nodded.

"Well, I passed it onto him, and he passed it onto his uncle. I think he said something about, well if we're going to have a movie industry, why not this? And yeah..."

"Oh, I see, it's all your fault."

"Yeah, I guess."

Maybe that's why he was reluctant to tell people he was a writer.
