25 May 2004 - Job offer

"You wanted to see me?" Julie asked, popping her head into Scott's office.

"Yes," Scott replied. "Have a seat."

"Oh great, I hope this isn't going to take long," Julie thought to herself as she sat down.

"I was wondering if you had any plans for after graduation," Scott said.

"Well, actually -"

"Because if you're planning on staying here while your children grow up, then we're going to expect you to do your bit. You can continue studies, if you want, but since you'll be out of high school, well, y'know. Now, I can't really offer you a job as an X-men, like I have to the other graduating students, because lets face it, you're not a mutant."

"Aren't there laws against discrminating against someone due to their race?" Julie responded.

Scott rolled his eyes.

"You'd be a liability, being powerless. Plus you have children, and this latest pregnancy to worry about."

"Hmm, I believe parental status and pregnancy are also things you're not supposed to discriminate against."

"Julie... be serious," Scott sighed. "How about your performance in PE class?"

"Like physical fitness is a qualification -"

"Actually, to a certain point, it is. But this is all besides the point!"

Julie made no attempt to hide her smile at his frustration.

"I can't offer you a position as an X-men. I can offer you a position as a teacher."

"Teacher?" Julie asked in surprise. "Me? What could I teach?"

They already had a competant IT teacher, which was her best subject. What subject indeed.

"Sex education."

"Sex education?" Julie repeated.

"Well, that just goes so show how much - or little - he thinks of me"

"Yes. I think of all the people in the school, you'd be the one the students would be more comfortable talking to. Being the... person that you are, you are probably the best person to advise them on safe sex, so on and so forth. It's obvious that trying to stop you kids from such behaviour is futile, so the least I can do is make an effort to make sure we don't end up with any more teenage mothers."

"And you think me, who has gotten pregnant twice, and the best person for that job?"

"I'm hoping that having a teacher who is a teenage mother - with four kids - will inspire them to be careful."

"Probably in the sense of 'I never want to be like her'," Scott thought to himself.

"Hmm..." Julie considered. "I have to say no."

She stood.

"Are you sure?" Scott asked. "You're unlikely to get a better offer than this. A job, a place to live, child care services and general living expenses virtually nil."

"I already have a better offer," Julie replied. "It's the one I create for myself."

She started for the door.

"Then go on, live off the genorosity of others, if it so suits you. It won't last long."

Julie left the office, making a serious effort to restrain herself from slapping him upside the mouth.

"Best revenge is success," she reminded herself.
