Braddocks
Rowena looked up from putting Billy to bed as she heard the front door open and someone come up the stairs and down the hall. She frowned, as Miette was at work and Duke at school, and looked out the door.
"Miette? Home so soon?" she asked.
"Hi Mum," Miette smiled.
Miette paused, uncertainly, then went on:
"I'm, ahh, I'm afraid I have to leave."
"Leave? Why?"
"Well... I've been recruited."
Rowena gave her daughter an inquiring look.
"Well, you know all about the rioting that's been happening since the equal rights for mutants act was introduced?"
"How can I miss it?" Rowena answered, thinking of all the violent news stories she had been hearing lately.
"Well... in order to... to hep get the public comfortable with it, they're incouraging any and all powerful and otherwise influential mutants to come forward. Of course, this is going to be rather dangerous for them because people are just going to come out and kill them once they know."
"It's all so very sad," Rowena nodded in agreement. "But what's this got to do with you leaving?"
"The YIRAAS have offered extra security measures to help keep these mutants protected. Myself and the better of my adult students have all been recruited to help provide these."
"How?"
"Well, holograms, and bending light to cloak things - and people. We can hide the mutant and, or provide a holographic image of them to lure away or otherwise distract trouble."
"I see."
"I was asked to put my students in a list, the best ones at the top, and we're going to be assigned according to the mutants... priority... I guess. I feel weird saying there are some people who are more important than others..."
Rowena nodded, and there was silence for a moment.
"I should start packing."
"Okay - Miette?"
"Yes?"
"If you... if you don't mind my asking, as the teacher you'd be the best of all of them right?"
Miette gave a small nod.
"So... who are you protecting? Or don't you know yet?"
"I know who..." Miette hesitated for a moment before answering. "It's Prince Harry."
