18 March 2004 - It's a sad, sad situation, and it's getting more and more absurd

Zac

Zac pulled out the beautiful elven knife. It once belonged to Faith, before she had gone a little crazy and Zac had had to destory her weapons before she did something she (or someone else) would regret.

But this he hadn't been able to destroy - it was such a beautiful knife. This he had kept for himself.

A tear dripped down his cheek. He had done so much crying lately, it was amazing he had any left.

He traced his finger along the flat of the knife.

He thought that... he thought Faith loved him. But she had... she had cheated. Now he knew he wasn't exactly innocent of that, but he had been trying. Even when she had been in Hell, and thought she was dead he hadn't slept with anyone. Wasn't that something?

And yet... she still left him.

For Logan.

The knife glinted in the light.

He didn't know what to do without her. Already he had been doing things... things that... that... well, just yesterday he had slept with Mouse. This time last year, Zac probably would have liked that. If she hadn't gotten together with Taylor, maybe they could have... he didn't know. But yesterday had been wrong. One way or another she was with Taylor (even if he was being stupid and avoiding her) and he was married to Faith (even though she had left him for another man). Maybe at the time yesterday had been really important. But now...

Zac looked again at the wedding ring, still sitting on the dresser.

He remembered getting that engraved.

Damn it... how could he live without her? How could he?

The cold metal of the knife felt so good in his hand. How easy would it be for him to end this... this intolerable suffering right now?

He touched the blade to his wrist, considering.

He looked at the ring again, then pursed his lips and began to put the pressure on.

Then Dee Dee started crying.

Zac paused, torn between getting up and tending to his daughters' needs and ending his pain.

"Daddy! Dee Dee's crying!" Saku shouted.

Zac hid the knife under the pillow just as Saku entered the room. He was glad Saku wasn't empathic - it probably wouldn't have done Saku any good to walk in on his father trying to kill himself.

"So I heard," Zac said. "C'mon, lets go see what she wants."

"'Kay."

And they left the room.
