Rebekah
Rebekah closed the curtains and sat in her dark room. She lay on her bed; her guitar lay in a corner, smashed beyond repair. She had tried to make herself feel better by playing, busying herself, but she couldn't. So she'd ended up hurling the guitar against the wall, screaming.
Blood was dripping from the cuts in her wrists. She'd been lying on her bed, bleeding for what seemed like forever, when in reality, it had most likely been about half an hour. Even so, her bed and clothes were gradually becoming more and more bloodstained, and she was feeling light headed from the loss of blood and more than likely, lack of food.
Eating hadn't been an option since Filipo and Terence died. She'd stayed in her room, only leaving to go to the bathroom occasionally. She'd learned the times when no one was really up. Except Jono, but she'd been blocking him out for awhile. She'd been blocking everyone she could, out. Sometimes her powers slipped a little and Jono spoke to her, but she never spoke back. She barricaded her door when she was in her room, and usually just lay in silence.
Terence hadn't survived the night. He'd managed a feeble "Night, mummy", before drifting off into an endless sleep.
Twins couldn't live without each other, so Rebekah had lost both of her children. And her first love. Well, life rocked at the moment, didn't it?
She lifted a hand feebly to her neck, where a silver chain sat, with the ring from Ian, threaded through the chain. Her blood dripped onto the ring and her neck, staining them a deep red.
There didn't seem to be much hope for her anymore. When Ian had died, in a way, the pain was lessened by the fact that she still had Filipo and Terence. And now, she didn't. How did his powers just stop working?
Rebekah knew that Meg blamed herself, but it wasn't her fault. Even if Rebekah had been there, she doubted even she would've been able to save either one of them. The truth of the matter was, Rebekah now felt more alone than she had ever felt in her life.
She still had Jono, but he didn't need to listen to her. He'd lost so much when his mutation kicked in, and who was she to try and say her life was worse than his? Because honestly, it wasn't worse than anyone's at the school, really. Rebekah wasn't going to pretend that she had suffered a thousand times more than, say, Sergei. Or Jono. Or Octavian. Because she hadn't. They were all basically in the same boat.
Trying to live their lives, even when it felt like things were collapsing.
This was life. Sometimes bad things happened, but you couldn't let it rule your life.
Rebekah almost laughed at that thought. She felt like a hypocrite. Here she was, trying to say that, basically, shit happens. That's just how life went, but you had to take the good with the bad, and you couldn't shut things out when bad things happened. And yet, what was she doing?
Hiding.
But she knew that if she went out of her room, everyone would feel what she felt. She had no control over her powers at the moment, and so maybe it was safer to hide out. Or maybe it wasn't for anyone else. Maybe she hid for herself.
Maybe it was shame. Shame that she hadn't been able to save Ian, and then she hadn't been able to save her children. Shame that if there had been one thing she owed Ian, it would be to raise their children well. And she'd managed to f*ck it up royally.
Or maybe it was guilt. Because she was pretty sure she knew how Jono felt about her, and she was feeling basically the same way. But she didn't want to say it out loud, because then it would be an insult to Ian's memory. He dies, and she falls in love with the next person who crosses her path. Nice, Bek, really nice. She was guilty for loving two people, one of which she could no longer have, and one who was there, and always there for her. Jono never expected anything from her, but he should. He deserved someone who could love him without feeling guilty about it. Someone who wouldn't just bring him down. And at the moment, that was all she could do. It was all she was capable of.
Or maybe it was just really simple. Maybe it was just loss. Sadness. Or a mix of all of those things. Three people. In the span of two months, she'd lost the three people who had been a part of her. Ian had been in her life for so long, in many ways, Rebekah was almost certain that they'd been sharing the same heart. It had beat together for each other, and when his side flickered out, she was left feeling like she'd lost herself. Left with no will or want to go on. Not without him.
And now Filipo and Terence were gone. Her reasons to keep smiling. Keep singing. To be the best person she could be. To keep living.
She was blacking out now, lying in a large pool of her own blood, and she didn't even have the energy to bandage herself up. And in the back of her mind, she didn't want to. She'd cut to dull the pain, not to die, but as it came upon her, death suddenly seemed like a good option.
She'd be free of this.
And in the shadows of her room, Rebekah's eyes slid shut, and she sent out a final thought.
"Goodbye..."
Jonothon.
"No..."
Jonothon put down his guitar abruptly and fled for Bek's room.
"DR MCCOY! PROFESSOR!"
Hank started, dropping the cup in his hands.
"Please, you have to come! Bek's hurt! Her room!"
Hank grabbed his medical bag and hurried for the lift.
"Oh my stars and garters..."
Jonothon jumped the last couple of stairs and skidded as he ran to her room.
"Bek! Don't die, don't die, don't die..."
Rebekah
Rebekah swore she heard voices, but she didn't have enough energy to concentrate and listen properly.
Jonothon.
Jonothon opened the door to her room and his eyes widened.
"Oh sweet Christ...oh god, Bek..."
He stood there stunned for a moment, then crossed quickly to her side. He put his thumbs over the arterys behind the skin, trying to stop the blood from flowing quite so quickly.
Rebekah
Rebekah moaned softly, eyes fluttering.
"Jono?"
Jonothon.
"God, Bek..."
Jonothon needed to cry, but he couldn't. Oh god.
Hank appeared at the door to the room and almost visibly blanched at the emotions crowding the room. He controlled himself and walked over to the bed.
"Let's get this fixed up and take her down to the medlabs."
He started to work efficently.
Rebekah
Rebekah's eyes rolled up in her head as she passed out.
Jonothon.
Hank picked her up gently and headed for the medlabs.
"Get my bag."
Jonothon picked it up and ran after Beast. They got in the lift and it was silent. Jonothon looked at Bek and wished again that he could cry. SHe was so white...
He followed Hank past Bobby on the hospital bed and the doctor put her down and went to get some bloodpacks.
"Bek...oh Bek..."
Bobby
Bobby strained his eyes to see what was happening.
"What's happened to Bek?"
Jonothon.
Jonothon falteringly touched her face.
"Oh god, oh god, oh god..."
Hank came back and gently pushed him out of the way as he set up an IV for Bek. Jonothon stared at his hand. It was reddened with blood.
Bobby and Rebekah
"What's happened?" Bobby asked again.
Rebekah's eyes fluttered.
"Oh god," Jonothon said in a strange voice.
He started to crumple, eyes still open but blank. Hank caught him and deposited him in a nearby chair. Then he started to stitch up the wounds in Bek's wrists, tsking to himself.
Bobby and Rebekah
"Um... what happened to Jono?" Bobby tried again.
Rebekah gasped in pain, then relaxed again.
Hank.
"At a guess, he fainted," Hank said, looking up, then back to his work.
He finished the row of stitches for the second wrist and tied it off neatly.
"There."
He checked the bloodbag and went to get another one. She had lost a lot of blood, and he'd need to replace it...
Bobby
"Now, the million dollar question... what happened to Bek?"
Bobby frowned.
"No one tells me anything."
Hank.
Hank went to wash his hands.
"Now that I think she will be fine without immediate attention...I can talk."
He rinsed the blood from his hands carefully, then went to clean up Bek.
"She has suffered greivous wounding to the wrists. They appear to be selfinflicted. She lost a lot of blood."
Bobby
"Ah, she cut herself and it took awhile for someone to find her."
Bobby tsked.
Hank.
"I would usually be called by the professor before it got this serious," Hank said.
"But as a telepath...she can usually block herself from casual scanning. Mr Starsmore called me."
Bobby
"Whoa."
Bobby shook his head.
"Heavy."
Jonothon.
Hank nodded slightly and changed the bloodbag over as it got near to emptying. What he wouldn't give for a compentent nurse...
Jonothon stirred slightly, blinking his eyes.
"Welcome back to the land of the conscious, Mr Starsmore," Hank said dryly.
"Miss LaVauney will be fine..."
"Oh thank God."
Jonothon leant over his knees, putting his head in his hands.
Bobby and Rebekah
"Maybe you should take a shower," Bobby said to Jonothon.
Rebekah whimpered softly.
Jonothon.
"Bek?"
Jonothon was up out of the chair and at her side almost immediately.
Hank moved back quietly and went to call the cleaning staff to take care of Bek's room.
Bobby and Rebekah
Bobby shrugged and switched his TV on softly.
Rebekah's eyes opened slowly.
"Jono?" she said quietly.
Jonothon.
"Oh god, Bek..."
Jonothon put his hands over his face to try and calm himself. At least visibly.
"Please don't do that again. Please."
Rebekah
Rebekah closed her eyes again and cleared her throat slightly.
"Yeah."
Jonothon.
"I was so afraid, Bek..."
Jonothon shook his head slightly.
"What were you thinking?!"
Rebekah
"I guess I didn't," Rebekah replied apathetically.
Jonothon.
Jonothon narrowed his eyes.
"No. You weren't. Obvious. Offing yerself is a coward's way out, and you ain't a coward."
Rebekah
"Jono, please, I'm sorry ok, is that what you want to hear?"
Rebekah turned her head away.
Jonothon.
"Don't say sorry. Just don't do it."
Jonothon turned away and noticed the blood on his clothes.
"I need to shower."
He left, shoulders hunched.
Rebekah
Rebekah closed her eyes for a moment, then rolled over weakly, onto her side.
She brought her hand up to her necklace and she started to cry again.
Hank.
Hank sighed slightly as he wrapped her other wrist in bandages.
"He had a shock. He'll be back."
He tried not to think about when Jonothon had been in here with badly slashed wrists, brown eyes daring him to comment. Although, his circulation didn't move fast enough for him to actually die...
He started almost guiltily.
Rebekah
Rebekah nodded and closed her eyes.
God, she was turning into Dawn.
Hank
Hank wrapped her other wrist carefully. He disappeared for a few minutes and came back with a glass and some pills.
"Here, take these. One is a painkiller, and the others are antibiotics to prevent infection."
Rebekah and Bobby
Rebekah took the pills.
"Thank you, Dr McCoy."
Bobby's head turned.
"Is it time for my pills?"
Hank.
Hank chuckled slightly.
"No. An hour. I have twinkies though."
Bobby
"Twinkies? YAY!"
Bobby grinned.
Hank.
Hank laughed as he left the room, returning with the box of twinkies.
"Twinkie, Bek?"
Bobby and Rebekah
"They're tasty, have one, Bek," Bobby advised. "Thanks Hank."
"Thank you, Dr McCoy," Rebekah said, sitting up slowly.
Hank.
Hank handed out twinkies and then took one for himself.
"As I've told Bobby, twinkies are my secret vice."
Bobby and Rebekah
"Oh no, now she knows your secret and she can wield this power evilly!" Bobby exclaimed melodramatically.
Rebekah shook her head slightly.
"You are most insane."
"Oh I know."
Hank.
"I too came to this conclusion quickly," Hank said.
He ate another twinkie before reaching for the next one.
"It's one of his more amusing traits."
Bobby and Rebekah
"Thank you, thank you, I'd bow if I could," Bobby said, finishing his twinkie.
"I think all the world's problems could be fixed with a twinkie."
"Nice theory," Rebekah commented, still worried about Jono.
Jonothon.
"Ah, if it was only true," Hank said.
"I would be out of a job if so."
Bobby and Rebekah
"That would be bad. Come on, let's all watch cartoons! Bey Blade is going to start soon. Man, I hate that show," Bobby said.
Rebekah shook her head again.
Hank.
The corners of Hank's muzzle quirked up in a wry smile.
"So why do you watch it?"
Bobby
"Hank, it's a cartoon. Look at who you're talking to."
Bobby smiled.
Hank.
"I have still to be convinced on the worthiness of cartoons as a form of entertainment," Hank said.
Bobby
Bobby's mouth opened wide.
"Hank, cartoons are cool!"
Hank.
Hank shook his head slightly.
"I'm not sure about that..."
Bobby
"Come on... you watched smurfs with me, admit you liked them!"
Bobby nodded.
Hank.
"It was vaguely amusing," Hank admitted grudgingly.
"It will perhaps require more viewing..."
Bobby and Rebekah
"Aha! You liked those cute little blue creatures!"
Bobby grinned.
Rebekah shook her head.
Hank.
"Blue's a good colour," Hank said calmly.
"Calming."
Bobby and Rebekah
"Like you, a big calm blue man!" Bobby said, nodding.
Rebekah bit her lip, wondering faintly if she'd lost Jono forever.
Hank.
"My code name is Beast," Hank said.
"But, compared to some of the other X-men, yes, I am relatively calm..."
Bobby
"Big softie, Beast you are. A cute, cuddly little... please don't hurt me, I'm injured!" Bobby said.
Hank.
"I don't have to hurt you," Hank said.
"I just don't have to give you pills."
Bobby
"No, Hank, you couldn't... no!"
Bobby pretended to cry.
Hank.
"I could, but I'm not going to," Hank said.
"That would be unethical behaviour."
Bobby
"Thank god you're ethical," Bobby said, breathing a sigh of relief."
Hank.
"Lucky for you, yes," Hank said.
"Another twinkie, anyone?"
Bobby and Rebekah
"Yes please!" Bobby grinned.
"No thank you," Rebekah replied, rolling over.
Hank.
Hank handed Bobby another twinkie.
"Twinkies are plentiful. I have two other boxes in my office. Plus however many are still upstairs. I hope Jean bought more when she went shopping."
Bobby and Rebekah
Bobby laughed.
"Life is good with twinkies!"
Bobby nodded.
Rebekah drifted off to sleep.
Hank.
Hank and Bobby ate twinkies, watched cartoons and continued to chat quietly. The doctor kept a watchful eye over both of his patients and their wellbeing.
