The Premonition

Written by Michelle

Zac

Zac opened the door.

"Hi Zac," said the guy standing there. "Uhh, I don't know if you remember me, But I'm -"

"Terry!" Zac grinned. "Of course I remember. Come on in."

Terry grinned and entered.

"It's been a long time huh?"

"Yeah. So whatcha been doing?"

"Oh not much. Work for an insurence company at the moment, preventing accidents before they happen."

"Oh?"

"Yeah," Terry grinned. "What they pay us is less than what they would have to pay out if someone made a claim. It's a pretty good gig."

"Cool, cool," Zac said as they sat down.

"How's the band?"

"We're on hiatus at the moment."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah, just practicing and stuff, trying to get something together," Zac shrugged. "Wow, it's been years. Why did we lose contact anyway? I forget."

"Oh, I made some prediction about you, methinks."

Zac snapped his fingers.

"That's right! You said that one day I'd go around sleeping with animals, and naturally I disagreed, because eww, that's gross. But you were adamant."

"Actually, I think I said said that one day you'd sleep with a cat," Terry grinned. "But I think that was during my 'getting to understand my power' stage, so it'll probably never actually happen."

"Actually it did."

"What?" Terry looked alarmed.

Zac chuckled.

"She was the daughter of the Egyptian cat goddess Bastet. Her name is Nyx. Actually, Bastet is dead now, so Nyx is the Egyptian cat goddess. But that's not the point. So yeah... she was a cat, but she was also human."

"Huh. Cool."

"I even have a son to show for it," Zac went on.

"Really?"

"Yeah, his name is Saku. Cute little mite. Very mischevious. Very catlike, but he can turn into one so I guess he has an excuse."

"Yeah..."

"Something amiss?"

"Well, I ahh... I kinda..."

"You had another premonition about me and that's why you're here?" Zac asked.

"Yeah."

"Is this something else we're going to argue about?"

"Probably."

"Man. Why can't you have premonitions we don't fight about?"

Terry laughed.

"Okay, so out with it. What's going to happen to me next? I'm going to loose a fortune on the pokies? I'm going to be in some drink driving accident tomorrow? Friday is finally going to get her weird wish to turn me into a girl and impregnante me? Saku is - what?" Zac asked, noting the look on Terry's face, "What is it?"

"That's it," Terry nodded, looking stunned, "You're going to get pregnant."

Zac stared.

"Noooooooooo. No. No, that sucks. Mannnn... She's not really going to do it, is she? Please say it isn't so? I was just joking!"

"Unfortunately, I'm not," Terry said. "Although I wasn't sure how it was goingto happen, you being a guy and all, but yeah. You're going to have a baby girl."

"Friday will be so happy," Zac muttered.

"Listen Zac, this is important," Terry went on, leaning towards him. "You're going to have an opportunity to get out of it."

"I am? Thank goodness for that!"

"Don't take that opportunity?"

The look Zac gave Terry was almost murderous.

"What?" he exploded. "Why the heck not?"

"It's important that the baby is born."

Zac rolled his eyes.

"No, seriously Zac. It's important. This child is going to be some kind of turning point. Literally the difference between life and death."

"Another cliche."

"Zac! Please!"

"You should hear yourself, Terry! 'Literally the difference between life and death'," Zac mimicked. "You're going to have to do a hell of a lot better than that to convince me."

Terry sighed.

"I don't have specifics," he said. "This isn't like preventing car accidents - this is long term Zac. She's going to grow up to be this powerful woman - "

"They say power corrupts."

"Only when bestowed upon the wrong person, or the wrong time. Or both."

"And how do we know that it's not going to corrupt her?"

"We don't. But I see the futures which are most likely to occur. And seriously, Zac, the world will need your daughter."

"Elektra," Zac mumbled.

"What?"

"That's what Friday wants to name her."

Terry was silent, not really knowing what to say.

"I'll think about it."

"Zac -"

"Terry, can it," Zac said, visably upset. "What you're asking me is to let someone turn me into a girl and impregnante me. To let this happen to me."

"Isn't the long term more important than a momentary discomfort?"

"Shut up!" Zac yelled. "I don't care about that. I don't freaking care!"

He sank back in his seat.

"But you talked about her... like somewhere, some time, she exists..." Zac shook his head. "Please go Terry. I want some time alone."

Terry stood slowly.

"I... I'm sorry Zac. I wish we could be friends - real friends - again."

"So do I."

Terry left Zac in silence, and left.
