Sophie, Heath & Elizabette
Sophie moved out on the last leg of her patrol. Her nerves were frayed and she'd nearly gone down under a fledge. She kept seeing Heath in dark corners. Watching her with amber eyes. A flicker of song ran through her mind and she hummed it. They'd sung it together, for some talent show.
Anywhere you go, I'll follow you down
Anyplace but those I know by heart
Anywhere you go, I'll follow you down
I'll follow you down, but not that far
And she knew the ways he'd gone down by heart. Demon possessed. He wasn't her friend anymore, just a demon possessed corpse. She had to tell herself that a lot. Otherwise she was going to hesitate when it came time to stake him. It. It. It wasn't a he. It was an it.
Heath stalked out of the darkness, and Sophie had to admit to herself he had never looked that good when he was alive. But that's because then he had been a person with his own thoughts. She stared at him and gripped her stake tighter.
"What do you want, vampire?"
"So little emotion. Let's try that again with more feeling."
Heath grinned at her, white teeth shining in the streetlamp's light.
"I'm feeling well today, thanks very much, Sophie. Had a good hunt. A girl, two guys. They walked straight into my hands and off the street. It's like shooting fish in a barel really. So, how have you been?"
"On a fairly productive patrol," Sophie said calmly.
"I staked ten fledges. Ready to be eleven?"
"But sweet Slayer, that would be no fun if you staked my Childe," Elizabette purred.
Sophie's fingers tightened on the stake as she stared at Elizabette. So, this was the one who'd killed Heath.
The two vampires kissed lingerly, then Heath looked back up at Sophie.
"Catch ya round, Prongs."
They disappeared and Sophie broke into a run. She didn't find them that night. But she found the fruit of their hunting.
