27 September 2003 - No Longer There

Nessa and Tegan

Gwen

Gwen somehow drove back to Xavier's, her subconscious buried within the safe confines of her mind. It was easier to stay lost. She got out of the car and walked up to the school, dropping her jacket in the hallway and dropping the keys a few metres from her room. She was covered in blood, dirt, soot, sweat, everything. She hummed, her hands up in the air, tracing strange patterns that only she could see.

She opened the door to Mordred's room and went in, then looked around in the dark. Seeing nothing, she frowned and sat on the ground, tracing the patterns onto the carpet with her index finger. She sang quietly to herself.

"Slowly drifting
Into a peaceful breeze
Tongue tied and twisted
Are all my memories
Celebrating a fantasy come true
Packing all my bags
Finally on the move

I'm leaving today
I'm living it
Oh I'm leaving it
To change

As I'm driving
I'm captured by the view
So much beauty
The road becomes my muse
The heat is rising
And my hand surfs through the wind
Cool, calm, collected
Is the child that lies within..."

Gwen stretched out on the floor and tried to go to sleep on the soft carpet.

Mordred

Mordred had been going out of his mind with terror. Faolan had done a runner to Spike and Vortigern's room, his empathic abilities unable to take the negative emotions, emaneting from his father.

The teen entered his room, tiredly, and almost stumbled over Gwen. "Gwen, oh my god, Gwen...what's happened to you?" He whispered in horror.

Gwen

"Sshhh, she's sleeping," Gwen scolded Mordred.

She hummed softly and raised a hand to trace patterns.

"My Lullaby, hung out to dry
What's up with that
It's over
Where are you dad
Mum's lookin' sad
What's up with that
It's dark in here

Why, bleeding is breathing
You're hiding underneath the smoke in the room
Try, bleeding is believing
I used to

My mouth is dry
Forgot how to cry
What's up with that
You're hurting me
I'm running fast
Can't hide the past
What's up with that
You're pushing me

Why, bleeding is breathing
You're hiding underneath the smoke in the room
Try, bleeding is believing
I used to
I used to

Why, bleeding is breathing
You're hiding underneath the smoke in the room
Try, bleeding is believing
I saw you crawling on the floor
Why, bleeding is breathing
You're hiding underneath the smoke in the room
Try, bleeding is believing
I saw you crawling on the floor
Why, bleeding is breathing
You're hiding underneath the smoke in the room
Try, bleeding is believing
I saw you crawling on the floor..."

Mordred

Mordred put a hand to his head as he failed to enter her mind. It was too confusing. Like...Nathan's. He shuddered. "Who's sleeping, Gwen love?"

Gwen

"Gwen is, silly," Gwen replied absently.

"They painted up your secrets
With the lies they told to you
And the least they ever gave you
Was the most you ever knew

And I wonder where these dreams go
When the world gets in your way
What's the point in all this screaming
No one's listening anyway

Your voice is small and fading
And you hide in here unknown
And your mother loves your father
'Cause she's got nowhere to go

And she wonders where these dreams go
'Cause the world got in her way
What's the point in ever trying
Nothing changing anyway

They press their lips against you
And you love the lies they say
And I tried so hard to reach you
But your falling anyway

And you know I see right through you
'Cause the world gets in your way
What's the point in all the screaming
You're not listening anyway..."

Mordred

"But you're...you're right here, talking to me," Mordred said, confused. He walked around her to where he could look her in the face. "C'mon. You need to have a shower, or something."

Gwen

Gwen sat up.

"I miss those days and I miss those ways
When I got lost in fantasies
In a cartoon land of mysteries
In a place you won't grow old in a place you won't feel cold and I'll sing..."

She sighed and stood up.

"Well, ok, whatever you say. But you know she can't hear you. She's sleeping, silly," Gwen giggled.

Mordred

"How do I wake her up?" Mordred asked carefully. "Beacuse I love her, and I like seeing her awake."

Gwen

Gwen crinkled her nose, getting agitated.

"You can't, because she's happier."

She brushed her hair out of her face.

"So much hair, I will cut it off."

She flinched.

Mordred

"Sometimes, you need to be awake to make life better," Mordred said quietly. "You shouldn't cut your hair. It's beautifl hair. If Gwen's asleep...who are you?"

Gwen

"Gwen," Gwen said patiently, as thought Mordred were the one who was crazy.

"Shhh, you're new at this, aren't you?"

She giggled.

"You needn't worry, she's ok. She stopped feeling a long time ago... but you," Gwen put her hand over Mordred's heart. "You feel it all, don't you? In here."

She cocked her head to the side.

Mordred

"I feel everything," Mordred said quietly. He pressed her hand to his chest a moment longer. "I'm still awake. Cmon. You need a shower. You're covered in dust."

Gwen

"Nooo," Gwen said, more agitated.

"That's not how we play the game."

She shook her head violently.

"I run and hide, and you... you come find me... with your needles and experiments."

Mordred

"I don't play that game," Mordred said firmly. "I've already had my share of experimentation practiced on me, thanks. I play a different game. One where I love Gwen and look after her, because she deserves to be looked after and cherished and loved."

Gwen

"NO LOVE!"

Gwen shook her head again.

"No, that's not in the game, there's no love. There's just hate!"

She collapsed to the floor and wrapped her arms around her knees.

"It doesn't matter what you say to me now, it doesn't make it better. Doesn't make it ok. Doesn't make it right. Doesn't make the feelings go. No love, no love, love doesn't exist, not here, not me, no, no, no. Bad Gwen, you've been bad, you're a freak, no, it's wrong, don't love, don't get love, because it's not in the game!"

Mordred

Mordred dropped to his knees in front of her, and put his hands on her shoulders. "Well, I don't know how to play any other games. All I know how to play is the one where I love Gwen. And I love her, and I look after her, and I make her smile, and I just love her because she's my angel, my beautiful one, my heaven sent girl. Because she's not a freak, no matter how many people tell her that she is. My electric sparks and smart mouthed woman. I love you, Gwen mo cariad. And I won't let you push me away. It's not how I play my game."

Gwen

Gwen whimpered.

"She doesn't know how to play your game. And she's scared."

Gwen wiped her tears away.

"Love can only mean pain."

Mordred

"I can teach Gwen to play my game. And love doesn't mean only pain. It means laughter and children and happiness and smiles and kisses and sharing and things like that. Good things." Mordred reached out to touch her face. "I love you. I love you, Gwen. There's no one in my life, not even Vortigern, who I love as deeply as I do you. And I take every bit of the pain that can come with loving you gladly, because I couldn't bear the emptiness if I didn't."

Gwen

Gwen nodded uncertainly.

"She's scared."

She whimpered again.

"You'll protect her? They'll come after her again, they will. They always do."

Mordred

"I saved her last time," Mordred said. "I came and got her, and I killed every one that had laid a hand on her. Because I love her. I protect her as well as I can. But I've seemed to have failed this time...if this is a game, can Sleeping Beauty be woken with a kiss from her true love? I think I'm him, but sometimes I'm not sure. I hope I am, because I don't think I could love anyone else the way I love you. You're my one and only, and it's only been you since the first time you smiled at me." He stroked her cheek. "Will you wake up and play my game? Maybe we can win this time."

Gwen

"But she's safe. Don't take her from where she's safe."

Gwen gave a tiny smile.

"She might come out and play later, but she likes being asleep."

Mordred

"You'll need to wake up sometime, Gwen," Mordred told her. "C'mon. You need a shower."

Gwen

Gwen nodded and stood up.

"If you say so."

Mordred

"I do," Mordred said. "The bathroom's through there..." He gestured. This was like taking care of a child...except it wouldn't hurt so much if it was. "Do you want me to help you, or do you think you can do it yourself?"

Gwen

Gwen gave him a long look.

"I can do it myself."

She hummed as she went into the bathroom and closed the door. The turned the taps on in the shower and peeled her clothes off, singing quietly to herself.

"She's his yellow brick road
Leading him on
And letting him go as far as she lets him go
Going down to nowhere

She puts on her make-up
The same way she did yesterday
Hoping everything's the same
But everything has changed

In my mind
Everything we did was right
Open your eyes, I'll still be by your side
How could I ever have been so blind?
You give me something to sleep to at night

He wakes up to the sound
So scared that she's leaving
He wishes she were still asleep next to him
Hoping she will change

In my mind
Everything we did was right
Open your eyes, I'll still be by your side
How could I ever have been so blind?
You give me something to sleep to at night

You give me something to sleep to
And all I know is
You give me something to dream to when I'm all alone and blue
Don't leave me now
Don't leave me now

Don't leave me now
Don't leave me now
Don't leave me now
Don't leave me now
Don't leave me now
Don't leave me now

In my mind
Everything we did was right
Open your eyes, I'll still be by your side
How could I ever have been so blind?
You give me something to sleep to
Something to sleep to
Something to sleep to at night..."

Gwen watched with fascination as the dirt and blood ran off her body. She turned the taps off then stepped out of the shower, wrapping a towel around her body. She looked in the mirror at herself and smiled weakly, then dried off and dressed in the fresh clothes there and opened the door.

Mordred

Mordred was sitting on the bed, staring at his hands. Xavier might have been able to help her. Hank's field was medicine, not psychology. What was he going to do? How could he bring her back to herself? "Hey," he said quietly, looking up as he heard the door open.

Gwen

"Hi puppy," Gwen greeted.

She skipped over to the window and sat on the sill, looking out.

"My feet hurt," she said quietly, holding her feet up for inspection.

Mordred

"Oh, bloody hell, Gwen!" Mordred said in shock. "I'll be back in a sec." He 'ported to the Medlab, snatched a medkit and 'ported back. "I'll clean those for you. Infectionc can be nasty." He knelt at her feet and opened the kit.

Gwen

Gwen held her feet up for Mordred, her hands raised and tracing patterns in the sky again. She looked out the window.

"She does love you, you know. Down here," Gwen held a hand over her heart. "But she's not ready to come out and play."

Mordred

"Do you know when she will be?" Mordred asked as he carefully cleaned her feet free of dirt and whatever she had stuck in them. "This may hurt a bit..." he warned her. "But I don't mean to do it, and I'll try as hard as I can not to. And I love her too."

Gwen

"She can't come out, not while the bad people want to hurt her."

Gwen winced as the disinfectant stung her feet.

Mordred

"I killed the last lot, so they aren't looking for her anymore," Mordred said. "And I don't think that the old ones are around at all. Dead by now, probably. And if they're not yet, they soon will be." His mouth tightened as he carefully cleaned up her feet.

Gwen

Gwen nodded.

"She's hiding."

She winced again.

"I'm tired."

Mordred

"I'm done." Mordred finished bandaging her feet. "You can sleep on my bed if you want. You were before." He leant back on his heels and looked up at her. "Need anything to eat or drink?"

Gwen

"No, thank you."

Gwen shook her head and limped over to his bed, and lay herself down, closing her eyes.

"Sleeping now."

And she drufted off to sleep.

Mordred

Mordred watched her, his heart aching. Once again, he couldn't help her. He didn't even know where to start. He sat and watched her sleep, sitting on Faolan's bed.
