21 September 2003 - Save me from the nothing I've become

Spook

Christina swirled the amber liquid in her glass, watching the light play through the fine whiskey and the ice that rested in the bottom of the shot glass. She felt...odd.

Like she'd never be warm again.

Like she was empty inside.

Like all that was in her was an endless hunger.

Nothing more and nothing less then nothing.

She could barely taste the alcohol, smell the smoke of the bar. She could still feel the pull of the smoke down into her lungs as she tapped the cigarette she was holding in the ashtray before bringing it back to her lips.

She felt out of place here.

Like the edges didn't quite fit.

Black shades hid her eyes from the rest of the room. Darkness inside and outside her. Coal black eyes watched the humans in the bar, and Christina wondered why suddenly she felt so very old. She paid the bar tender and slipped once more out into the night, leaving the buzz of conversation behind her.

Out into the darkness again...

Cold. She felt so cold these days. Since she'd gone to Kansas...

She should drop Mouse and Natty a line. Let them know she'd survived. She was betting Tanya knew she was back, after blowing that complex sky high. She hoped the agent couldn't sleep at night. Something to be done there. She just had to figure out what. She opened the door to her car and got inside, shotgun already there for her hand as she stroked the cool metal. Some things never did change...she inserted the keys into the lock and started the engine. The black car slid smoothly into the city traffic as Christina slid another cigarette between her lips and lit it with a flick of her lighter. She turned on the radio, and sang along softly to the song that came on.

"How can you see into my eyes
like open doors.
Leading you down into my core
where I've become so numb.
Without a soul
my spirit's sleeping somewhere cold
until you find it there and lead it back home.

(Wake me up.
Wake me up inside.
I can't wake up.
Wake me up inside.
Save me.
Call my name and save me from the dark.
Wake me up.
Bid my blood to run.
I can't wake up.
Before I come undone.
Save me.
Save me from the nothing I've become.)

Now that I know what I'm without
you can't just leave me.
Breathe into me and make me real
Bring me to life.

Bring me to life.
I've been living a lie
There's nothing inside.
Bring me to life.

Frozen inside without your touch,
without your love, darling.
Only you are the life among the dead.

All of this sight
I can't believe I couldn't see
Kept in the dark
but you were there in front of me

I've been sleeping a 1000 years it seems.
I've got to open my eyes to everything.

Without a thought
Without a voice
Without a soul

Don't let me die here
There must be something wrong.
Bring me to life.

Bring me to life.
I've been living a lie
There's nothing inside.

Bring me to life..."

The car merged with the traffic and disappeared into the city's anonymous depths.
