Gwen
Gwen sighed contentedly. There was absolutely nothing like getting paid for a job she loved. It hadn't been too difficult, in and out of a building in under 10 minutes, after having to put on a show at a party for a few hours. That was the hardest bit, pretending she was madly in love with Mark. But it didn't matter, because he understood, hopefully, that they were never going to be anything.
She lifted her phone and dialled Mordred's number in.
"Hello?"
Mordred
Mordred was laying in bed wondering why Gwen had lied to him, when the phone rang. He moved Faolan slightly so he could reach over and grab it before he stopped ringing. When he heard Gwen's voice, he almost wished he hadn't. "Hello."
Gwen
"Hey Mordred, whatcha up to?" Gwen asked perkily, somewhat surprised at how happy she was to hear his voice.
She picked up a marble ornament off her dresser and rolled it around on her fingers.
Mordred
"Oh, not much..." Mordred felt the knife twisting deeper into his heart. "Just playing with Faolan. Well, lying in the bed while Faolan hunts my feet.
Gwen
"Cool... sorry I fell asleep on you before. That was kinda rude. You should've woken me up."
Gwen paused, feeling something was definitely wrong with him.
"Uh... are you ok? You seem kinda weird."
Mordred
"Nah, I'm fine. Fine...why?" Mordred twisted his fingers through Faolan's warm fur and the kitten purred and snuggled up to his neck. "Didn't mind that ya fell asleep on me. You looked tired..."
Gwen
"Well, I'll have to make it up to you."
Gwen smiled.
"You just... I don't know, seem distant. Which is kinda understandable seeing as I did kinda fall asleep in the middle of our night together, and I feel really bad about that, sorry."
Mordred
Mordred shifted slightly on his bed and the springs squeaked slightly. He rubbed Faolan's ears thoughtfully as he tried to think of what to say. He didn't really have a leg to stand on, as cheating went. "Nah, your falling asleep didn't bother me. Not really. Didn't get to say goodbye cos Faolan needed me, but yeah...I don't know. Just in a bot of an odd mood, I guess."
Gwen
"Oh."
Gwen knew something was up, but she wasn't quite sure what it was.
"So, did you feel like catching up soon? I promise not to fall asleep, I've been relaxing basically since the job I did the other day."
Mordred
"I don't know..." Mordred said hesitantly. "I got Faolan to look after, and I don't like leaving him alone for too long or too often. He saw some bad stuff before Nyx got him here...you could come up here though."
Gwen
"Oh... oh ok. I... would you come and get me or..."
Gwen bit her lip. He definitely sounded weird.
Mordred
"When?" Mordred made an effort to sound normal. "Just tell me when. Always happy to help a lady."
Gwen
"Um, whenever you're ready, I guess. I'm pretty much free from now onwards."
Gwen frowned, wondering what happened.
Mordred
"How did the job go?" Mordred asked casually. He didn't know if he was up to facing her yet. He had to get everything he felt under control. He was barely coping with talking with her on the phone, there was no way he was up to seeing her face to face.
Gwen
"Pretty well, I guess. I mean it was fairly standard, we had to be in and out of the building, once we'd left the party, in about ten minutes. The worst bit was the party. A few hours of boring stuffy conversation."
Gwen realised she was nervous. but she couldn't help it. He seemed different to her.
Mordred
Jealous pictures flashed through his mind and Mordred gritted his teeth slightly. "Yeah? What did ya have to gin and steal? Or is that need to know only?" He said jokingly.
Gwen
Gwen let out a short laugh.
"Oh it was just this ancient Korean sword. With some sort of magical ability. I never did pay that much attention. But Mark's boss needed it for some deal he was trying to put through. And it was a partner job, not my favourite, but yeah, you get that."
Mordred
"Swords, hey? Well, some people want the strangest things..." Mordred didn't let his jealousy into his voice. Let he among you who is without sin cast the first stone, he reminded himself. I have no call, no place pulling Gwen up on this. "Why did ya havta work with him?"
Gwen
"He's the only one game enough to work with me."
Gwen chuckled.
"Well it was his boss who wanted the job done, and he and I had worked together before, so I was probably the best choice. Plus, it had to be a quick job as well, and I'm the best person for cracking a safe in a short time."
Mordred
"Yeah...always havta be the best, don't ya, Gwen?" Mordred said softly. Faolan yawned, and shifted slightly. "Careful of the claws there, whelp. Sorry. He's kitteny at the moment and sometimes none too careful with his claws..." Mordred thought a silent apology at his son when a green eye opened to regard him balefully.
Gwen
"Yeah, I like to be the best," Gwen grinned. "Oh, cute."
She paused. Despite what had happened, she was still a little uneasy with the Faolan situation.
Mordred
"He is pretty cute..." Mordred smiled slightly. "Giving me the evil eye at the moment...still cute though. Not even vaguely intimidating."
The glare intensified.
Gwen
Gwen laughed.
"It'll change. When he gets older, he'll get more intimidating."
She felt he was being a little less weird with her than before, but something was definitely on his mind.
MOrdred
"Yep, he'll grow up to be a bad boy like his da. Ain't that right, whelp?" Mordred turned Faolan onto his back and rubbed his tummy. The kitten squeaked and then purred, the purr shifting as he became a wolf. He wriggled on his back until Mordred rubbed harder, back leg thumping slightly on the bedspread. "Brave and true...but dark. And probably have a really odd sense of humour."
Gwen
Gwen smiled.
"Yeah, well, that happens. He'll probably be shirty as well."
Gwen groaned as her cell phone started to ring. She looked at the screen, 'Angel Investigations'. She cancelled the call, making a mental note to call them back.
Mordred
"I am not shirty!" Mordred protested. "You *always* say that..."
Faolan licked his face.
"Gah, go human before you kiss me!"
Faolan laughed wolfishly.
"Brat..."
Gwen
"I like to keep it consistant."
Gwen grinned.
"So... yeah..."
Mordred
"Yeah..." Mordred said quietly and fiddled with the phone cord. Faolan eyed it and pounced, growling in his puppy voice. "Whelp. Don't chew on the phone cord."
Gwen
Gwen let out a goran when her cell phone started ringing again. She glanced at the screen to see 'Private Number' flashing up. It was work. She'd have to take this one.
"Hey, I kinda have to go, duty calls. I will call you tomorrow though, ok?"
Mordred
"Yeah, that's cool," Mordred said. "Talk to ya then, love."
Gwen
"Bye."
Gwen hung up and flipped her cell open.
"Yeah?"
She frowned.
"Tonight? Alright. Tell me everything."
