24 August 2003 - Unhappy Endings

Nessa

Anya and Xander

Anya lifted the phone slowly, unsure of what she wanted to say, but knowing she had to talk to him. She missed him too much to just let their relationship end so swiftly. It was time to face up to the past, talk about everything that had happened between them. He'd left her at the altar, but he'd explained his reasons. She hadn't agreed with them, but their breaking up had affected her in worse ways than she'd like to admit.

And so here she was, sitting nervously with the phone in her hand. She shakily dialled in Xander's humber and waited for him to answer.

"Hello, Xander here," his voice chirped over the line.

"Xander? It's Anya."

Silence.

Anya took a deep breath. "Look, I'm coming to Tulsa, I'm actually on my way... would you mind if I dropped in?"

"Sure, go for it."

"I'll be there soon."

"No entourage?" Xander's voice sounded amused and Anya grinned.

"Nope, not right now. Will probably get Kennedy down later. Andrew too."

"Cool, well, how long till you get here?"

"About... an hour?"

"Cool, I'll see you then!"

Anya pulled up at Xander's house and got out of the car. She walked to the front door, her knees shaking slightly, but then knocked on the door. He opened it seconds later and pulled her in for a hug.

"An!"

"Xand!"

They hugged for what seemed like an eternity, then went and sat down in his living room.

"So..."

"So."

A few seconds passed and then Anya launched into the speech she'd been practicing in the car. Xander listened patiently, adding where he felt he needed to comment, but basically let her vent out her anger about him to him. When it was over, Xander sat shocked.

"So... is this... are we cool?" Anya asked.

"I'm not sure. All I know is that I'm really sorry things ended up this way."

"Same."

"Do you... uh... want to start all over?"

"And pretend it never happened?" Anya raised an eyebrow.

"No... we learn from our mistakes and we grow... so why don't we try and fix it?"

"Are we ever going to get a happy ending?"

"I'm not sure."
