4 August 2003 - Speaking of people who have questionable genders

Michelle and Joy

Friday, Julie and Zac

Julie felt a little guilty. She felt guilty that she was in Texas, preparing to escape a predicted doom on the planet, and her family was at home in Roswell without a clue.

But what could she do? Nothing. The matter wasn't in her hands. It was in that of those who made the rules. Damn them.

There was quite a number of people at the santuary in Texas. Many people would be going to the station, but Julie was not. Teleporting that far was dangerous for her, being eight and a half months pregnant.

Julie was sitting in the cafeteria, watching everyone. She had arrived with the Evanses, but they were now in the station. Isabel had offered to stay with her, but Julie had declined.

"You'll be much happier up there," she had told her. "I know I would be."

Isabel had promised to come back down and visit as soon as she could. Julie told her not to worry if she couldn't.

A boy with short black hair sat down at her table.

"Hey, Julie?"

"Yes?"

"It's Friday."

Julie stared, then laughed.

"So, you're a boy today huh?"

"Just hiding from certain people."

"I see. How'd you know it was me?"

"You're the only one my age around this joint who's that far pregnant."

"Oh!" Julie giggled. "Well, I suppose that's true."

Friday grinned back and then turned into a girl again.

"Y'know, now that I can control it, it's so much fun changing sexes. Y'know, once you get past the 'oh man... when I'm a guy I actually think Birtney Spears is sexy' thing."

Julie laughed.

"Actually, it's almost a disappointment my preference changes with my gender. I'll turn into a guy to go perve on a cute guy I like and what happens? My male self isn't interested."

"Aww."

"Exactly."

"Oooh," and Julie's eyes glittered. "Speaking of people who have questionable genders... I believe the Hansons are here."

"Oh really."

"Yes really. And I think it's high time you conceeded that Zac is defintely a guy."

"Bring it on."

The girls got up (Julie slower than Friday) and went walking.

"There they are," Julie said, nodding her head in their direction.

"Where?"

"See the buff guy with the short hair?"

"Yeah?"

"That's Zac."

"No way! You lie!"

"I do not. That's him. Hey Zac!"

Zac heard someone call his name, turned and spotted Julie.

"Hi Julie!" and he trotted over. "Who's your friend?"

"This is Day."

"Oh, you're Day!"

Friday looked him up and down.

"Okay, okay, you win Julie. I conceed that Zac's a guy."

Julie grinned, and Zac smirked.

"But maybe you can do something about Tay," Zac said, pointing to his brother.

"He is rather pretty isn't he?" Friday grinned.

Jessica, Adam and Rachel

Jess, Adam, Rachel and Tobia, who was currently perched on Rachel's shoulder, came up.

"Hey Julie!" Rachel said, giving her a hug. "How's the baby? Oh,msorry, I'm rude. You know Jess, and this is Adam, and THIS," she gestured to the hawk, "Is Tobias, my boyfriend."

Zac, Julie and Friday

"Hi!" Julie grinned. "This is my cyberpal Day."

"Yo," Friday replied, with a raised eyebrow. "Y'know, I might not be the one to talk, seeing as I can turn the living and the not-so- living into the opposite gender, but I don't think bestiality is particularly good."

Zac and Julie looked at each other and started laughing. Friday gave them both a confused, weird look.

Tobias

I resent that remark, Tobias said in open though-speak. Then he fleww off of Rachel's shoulder, landed on the ground, and morphed human. He held out his right hand.

"Hi, I'm Tobias," he said to Day.

Julie, Friday and Zac

"Oh, well, that will do it," Friday replied.

Being used to seeing Kat shape shift, it didn't really shock her.

"Tobias is an Animorph," Zac explained. "Actually, so is Rach."

"Meaning?"

"They were exposed to some alien technology that's given them to ability to turn into animals who's DNA they acquire," Julie replied.

"Oh I see. Well, sorry if I offended ya, dude, but let's face it, what else was I suppose to think?"

Tobias

"Yeah, I know, get it all the time. Actually, I'm a hybrid. My father was an Andalite in human form. Then there was an accident, and I was stuck in hawk form, and now I can only be human for two hours at a time, or else give up all my powers." he grinned. "Personally, I like my powers." He cracked his neck.

"So, Day, what's your power?"

Friday and Zac

"Sex change," Friday grinned. "It freaked me out at first, because I didn't know I was half alien. But now..."

She grinned. And then she became a he.

"Dude!" Zac exclaimed. "And you accused me of being a girl."

"Speaking of which..."

"What? Eek!" Zac yelped. "I'm a girl!"

Rachel and Tobias

Rachel giggled. "Hey, Day, wondering here. Okay, I'vbe already acquired Zac's DNA once before. But when you changed him into a girl, do you think that changes his DNA? Like, if I acquired his DNA now, would i be Zac as a girl?" Rachel pondered.

"Interesting idea, babe," Tobias said, kissing her on the cheek.

Friday, Julie and Zac

"I believe so," Friday replied. "I believe it's just the X/Y gene I play around with. So yeah, you would get girl DNA."

"Now my baby is really going to have two mothers," Julie mused.

"Yeah, yeah, this is all very amusing," Zac said in a rich contralto. "Now change me back!"

"What's the magic word?"

"Now."

"Oh really? And what if I don't?"

"Cat fight?" Zac suggested.

"Cute. But how about we settle this... mano a mano?"

And Friday turned them both into boys.

"Yay! I'm a boy again - ooof."

Friday made a 'come and get me gesture'.

"Bring it on!"

"Oooh, you're on!"

Rachel

Rachel giggled. "Beware of Zac, Day. He fights dirty!" She told him.

Zac, Isaac, Julie and Friday

"I wasn't named Challenge Champion for nothing," Zac grinned.

"I'm sure if I knew what that was I'd be properly amazed," Friday replied drly.

"What's going on?" asked Isaac, joining them.

"Zac and Day are about to fight," Julie told him. "Day is my friend from Australia. Her power is sex change. Well, his now, I suppose..."

"They're are not going to fight," Isaac corrected. "First person to make a wrong move gets stuck to the wall."

"Aww, you're not fun," Zac complained. "She turned me into a girl."

Friday smirked at him as he changed himself back into a girl.

"Baby."

"Yes, that's what Julie has inside of her," Zac replied. "I see you've done your homework."

Julie giggled.

Jessica

Jess giggled as she leaned against Adam.uddenly, she went into a sort of trance, and then got a sappy look on her face. "Awwwe! Julie!" she said, as she came back to reality. "Your baby is dreaming!"

Julie, Zac and Friday

"Oh, really?" Julie asked wide-eyed with awe. "What about?"

"Jess' power is dreamwalking," Zac explained to Friday, who was looking confused.

"Oh, right. Cool."

Jessica

"It's a really simple dream, actually. It's just a lot of emotions of 'I love mommy,'" Jess grinned. Then she spotted something. With her power, even in the waking world, if somebody was sleeping, she could sense dream orbs. There were two of them, hovering around Julie. Jess smiled secretly to herself. If Julie had gone this long without knowing, she deserved the surprise.

"It's dreaming about being happy, and safe, and warm, and being with mommy. Oh, it's just so cute! I wish you could all see this."

Julie and Zac

Julie's eyes filled with happy tears.

"Oh my gosh," she sniffed. "Oh my gosh."

Zac chewed his lip. On the one hand, he was sorry he had caused Julie so much trouble. but on the other, she looked really happy right now. Happier than he had ever seen her.

Adam

Adam smiled. Both Julie and Jess had the happiest looks on their faces.

"So," He said. "I guess that any doubts you ever had about keeping the baby just flew out the window?" He supplied.

Julie

"If I had had any doubts, yes," Julie grinned. "I'm not sure I ever did, or it may have only been for a little while."

Rachel

"Awwww," Rachel said. Then she got a sad look on her face. "I wish I could be a mom." SHe sighed, and Tobias pulled her tighter in his arms, reassuringly.

"Rach, you will be a great mom someday. Adoption can be amazing, you know," he promised her.

Julie and Friday

"And in the meantime, I promise you can babysit," Julie smiled.

"And I will have no sympathy for you when you have to change their nappies," Friday put in.

"Nappy?" Julie repeated.

"Yeah, duh... oh wait, I'm sorry... you 'Mericans call them 'diapers'," she snickered.

Rachel

"I like to baby-sit," Rachel said. "I have younger sisters, so, I'm quite used to the diaper-changing. I also used to baby-sit for Marco's cousins when they were little babies." Rachel stretched, and then set her head back on Tobias's shoulder.

"I love it when you're human. Nice and tall."

Julie, Isaac and Friday

Julie smiled.

"So, who are you anyway?" Friday asked Isaac.

"I'm Isaac."

"Zac's bro?"

"Yeah."

"Yeah, talk about me like I'm not here," Zac put in.

"Okay," Friday bated. "So, your brother Zac, tell me the truth. He's gay isn't he?"

"If only he was," Isaac replied with a twinkle in his eye, "he wouldn't be a teenage father then. Multiple times."

"Multiple? Shite. Maybe I should turn him into a girl get and him - her pregnant."

Isaac laughed.

Rachel

Rachel had to laugh at that. "Do it! Do it!" she teased. "He deserves it," she giggled madly. Then she looked at Friday. "Is there any way you could turn me into a girl who still has a uterus?" she asked dryly.

Friday and Zac

Friday grinned broadly at Zac's look of horror.

"Don't like that idea much, huh?"

"Hey, I never got any of them pregnant on purpose."

"Sure, sure," and Friday turned to Rachel. "I can do that. It was something I figured out when I was learning to control my power - on my own I might add. See, I accidently turned the neighbours dog into a girl. I turned it back later and it was desexed as it should be, but then I did some more experimenting and before I left my neighbours ticked me off. SO I changed their dog into a girl again, and then back into a... ahem... fully functional male. I call it restoring and resetting. I'm sure I can do that with you, if you don't mind being a boy for a little while first."

Rachel

"Oh my god," Rachel looked estatic. "I didn't think it could be done! Of course I'd like you to do it! I mean, I've basically been in a big funk for over a year. Ever since I had that accident, and then I had to have a hysterectomy."

Friday and Zac

"No problem. But umm..." Friday looked Rachel up and down. "You might wanna change first. I don't know what your male self looks like, but yeah... turning into someone bigger than you has really bad consequences on you clothes. Went through a few bras before I got the hang of it. Actually... every now and then I have a bit of a hiccup, and manage to wreck another one but... what are you snickering at Zac?"

Zac just grinned cheekily.

"I don't know. Why do guys always get so silly when you mention the word 'bra'?"

"Well, you've been a guy, you should know."

"The probably with being a guy is that my mindset changes to. It seems my male self insn't into psychological thought. Typical."

Rachel

"Cool. Maybe later, you can come to my room, so we won't be out in the open?" Rachel suggested.

Friday and Isaac

"Sure, no problemo dude."

"Aww, what happened to 'fair dinkum mate'?" asked Isaac.

Friday gave him a look.

"I don't know," she replied sweetly, "it probably went out the window after all the American TV we're forced to watch."

Friday and Julie

"Friday! We've been looking all over for you!"

Friday groaned and looked towards her step mother. Julie gave her a sympathetic smile.

"Come on, we have to go up," Troy added.

"Whatever," Friday grumped.

"I'll see you later," Julie said.

"When are you going up?"

"Not until after the babies are born."

"Oh really?"

"Yeah, not good teleporting. But I'm not the only one. There's going to be a few people staying underground here," Julie sighed. "I keep thinking I should have gone to the mountain."

"Well, if you had, we wouldn't have met," Friday said.

She gave Julie a hug.

"We'll see each other again soon."

"Yeah."

And Friday reluctantly left.
