8 July 2003 - The baby

Julie

Julie had an appointment with Dr Patterson. As it was closer to the due date, her checkups were weekly.

"Julie?" came a familiar voice.

Julie stood up and smiled at Dr Patterson, then stared. This woman was most certainly not pregnant.

"I'm Dr Patterson," she said.

"You are?" Julie asked.

"Yes. I'm Lora's twin, Lisa," Lisa smiled.

"Oh! Where's Lora?"

"She went into labour about an hour ago. I arrived a couple of days ago to help her out with her patients."

"I see. Lora didn't mention you."

"I'm not surprised. With all the excitement, she probably forgot."

Julie was just walking out the door of the office after her checkup when a messager arrived.

"Dr Patterson?" he asked.

"Yes?" Lisa asked.

"Lora's had the baby. A boy."

Lisa's face lit up.

"Fantastic. Julie's my last for today, I'll be right over."

"Okay," and the messager ran off to deliver other messages.

"Wow, that's great," Julie smiled. "Send her my congratulations."

"I will."

Lisa and Lora

Lisa soon arrived at Lora's side.

"How are you?" Lisa asked.

"I'm wonderful," Lora smiled.

"And the baby?"

"A boy. Jason."

Lisa nodded.

"Something odd happened..."

"Yes?"

"The air is... different around Jason."

"How so?"

"It's... how can I explain it? Fresh? If your close enough to him... breathing is... easier. I mean, I suppose you think I'm being strange. But it would be fair of me to say that the air in the country is easier to breathe than in the city?"

"Yes..."

"Around Jason it's easier still. I suppose you have to experience it to know what I mean. I don't know what his power is but it's truly remarkable."

"I see," Lisa nodded. "And with these predictions of nuclear bombs - if he can make air breatheable..."

Lora looked alarmed.

"He'll be a blessing all right. But he'll also be a... a... a prize."

"Don't worry. No one's going to take your baby away from you," Lisa assured her. "After all, right now he is still just that. A baby. And until his power fully develops, there's no point in trying to exploit him. He simply doesn't have the strength nor experience for it, and anyone with any ounce of knowledge about alien powers knows that. In the meantime we can do our part to protect him, and make sure he knows how to protect himself."

Lora nodded.
