4 July 2003 - These things happen

Rogue and Gambit

"Good evening cheri," said a familiar voice.

Rogue looked up from playing with the fuzzles.

"Hi Remy," she said.

"Fuzzles keepin' yo up?" Gambit asked, putting Red down with them.

"Yeah," Rogue replied with a small yawn.

"Named them yet?"

"Yeah. Rory, Rusty, Scarlett, Zurina, Caleb and Rosa."

Gambit nodded.

"Somethin' wrong Cheri?"

"No. It's just... ya haven't been here for a while. Ah was beginning to think ya wouldn't come back."

"Of course I was going to come back. I said I would."

"Maybe people say things they don't mean."

Gambit had nothing to say to that. He was guilty of that.

"Ah missed you," Rogue said finally. "And they missed Red."

Gambit smiled faintly as he drew close to her. He ran his fingers through her hair.

"I missed you too, Cheri," he said softly.

Rogue closed her eyes and breathed in his scent. He was one of a very short list of people who ever dared to get this physically close to her. She wanted so much just to...

"Everything work out okay?"

"Hmm?" Gambit inquired, moving his hand from her hair and wrapping his arm around her shoulders instead.

"Y'know, whatever it was that you had to do," Rogue answered, opening her eyes again.

She wanted so much to just... just kiss him right then. For months now she'd wondered what it would be like but with her powers? Despite his bad jokes of "it might be worth it", Rogue was unwilling to hurt him.

"Everyt'ing worked out fine,"

"Okay, good," Rogue said lifting her own gloved hand to touch his face.

Gambit took her other hand and kissed it. Had Rogue waited but a moment longer she could have resisted the urge, but instead she closed the very short distance between them, kissing his lips sweetly. Sure enough it didn't long before she was absorbing Gambit. When she pulled away, Gambit slumped to the ground and Rogue made as if to swipe his wallet. She was just slipping it out when Gambit regained himself and grabbed her wrist. Rogue swallowed hard.

"Sorry," she said. "Ah'm sorry."

She turned away, ashamed at her lack of self-discipline. She closed her eyes as she felt Gambit's hand sit on her shoulder.

"It's okay, Cheri. It's okay."
