29 June 2003 - Asking The Questions

Gwen and Kate

Gwen and Kate sat in their room, the silence only broken by their breathing and Kate's occasional groan as she continued to get high. Gwen looked over at her new roommate.

"So how long are you going to be here?" Gwen asked.

Silence.

"Until you can control your powers?"

Silence.

"Do you like it here?"

Silence.

"Where were you before this?"

Silence.

"Do you like chicken?"

Silence.

"Right... well... I'll leave you alone then?"

Getting no answer again, Gwen sighed and stood up. She left the room, slamming the door on the way out. Kate finally looked up. "No more questions... NO MORE!" She picked up her bag and hurled it at the door.

Kate stared in anger at the door and her belongings scattered around the room. She was shaking in unexplained anger, so she took another puff of her joint and lay back against her pillow, trying to relax. Outside, she was watching a tree that was swaying in the wind. Her hands were shaking again, and she ached to not feel. The pot was slowly getting rid of feeling, but she needed something quickly. Something that was instant.

Kate stood and went to the door, and picked up all of her belongings. She found her syringes and took them back to her bed. She injected herself with a syringe full of drugs and smiled as the colours swirled in front of her eyes.

"Ooohhhh." She smiled and reached out trying to grab at the colours.

Her pain was dulling into the back of her mind, and the familiar sensation of feeling nothing was arriving. This state of mind was nice... everything was ok, nothing felt bad... mainly because there was nothing to feel. Kate closed her eyes and let herself be sucked into the darkness.

"How you can not notice you're only wearing one glove is insane," Gwen muttered to herself. She opened the door to her room and spotted her glove on the bed. "Hi Kate... I know, you're only going to greet me with silence."

Silence.

"Well that was hardly surprising." Gwen looked over and saw her roommate with her eyes closed on the bed. She spotted an empty syringle still in her arm. Gwen let out an alarmed cry and jumped over much of her furniture over to Kate. She took the syringe out carefully and put it on her desk. She listened for Kate's heartbeat.

Silence.

"Oh shit!" Gwen pulled her glove off and shook her hand. She pulled Kate's shirt down slightly. "Come on." She touched Kate's chest over her heart and then listened to see is it had worked.

Silence.

"Come on!" Gwen shook her hand again and touched Kate's chest a few more times until she heard the heartbeat return.

Kate's eyes flew open immediately and she sucked in a large breath of air.

Gwen put her glove back on and sat on her own bed while Kate was sputtering for air.

"We need to chat."

Kate glared angrily at Gwen. "Why the hell did you do that for?"

"Hey, I saved your life, you could at least say thanks. Be a little thankful, geez!"

"Well, I'm not thankful. So I'm not going to say thanks."

"You know, the attitude is really getting old."

"So are your lectures."

"You know what? Maybe next time I find you like this, I won't bother saving you. Because Lord knows we'd all be happier without you."

"You know what?" Kate mimicked Gwen. "Don't save me. I don't want to be saved."
