31 May 2003 - Breakfast

Mouse and Mordred

Mouse sat on the corner of a bench, nibbling on toast, one foot scratching Fafnir's tummy as he sprawled out below her. She didn't think anyone else was up, it was pretty early. And she wasn't good at sleeping in new places. She swapped and drank from her cup of coffee, milky and sweet the way she liked it in the morning. Fafnir rumbled in contentment and she grinned, letting her shields down a little. Nyx had told her just to help herself if she needed something to eat...she hoped she wasn't breaking any rules. She frowned for a moment, then shrugged. Someone would tell her if she was.

~*~*~*~

Mordred and Gwen headed down to the kitchen hoping to get something to eat. Mordred saw that the light was on and shrugged. He'd hoped for no one to be there, but hey. Ya can't have everything ya want in this life.

Gwen

Gwen followed Mordred into the kitchen reluctantly. She kept her head down, unsure if she wanted to speak with anyone this hour of the morning. It was easier to avoid people, avoid questions, avoid looks.

Mouse and Mordred

Mouse gasped and recoiled from Gwen's emotions, dropping her mug. Fafnir leapt up with a howl of pain as the hot coffee scalded him. "Merde! Fafnir, Pack, stay still." Mouse picked her way over the shards of the cup and Fafnir whined but stayed still.

"Y'alright, kid?" Mordred asked in concern. He hadn't meant to startle her.

"Oui, bien." Mouse gritted her teeth under the onslaught of pain from Fafnir, this girl and this guy. Why her? Why when she'd been so relaxed? "Grab a cloth or something, will ya?"

"Yeah, sure." Mordred bent down and grabbed a cleaning cloth, before throwing it to the obvious bottle red headed girl. She caught it and bent down, cooing to the large dog. Dog? That was a wolf! "Is he...safe?"

"He's perfectly safe." She looked up from her position kneeling on the floor and grinned wickedly. "Can't say the same for you."

Gwen

Gwen backed up against the wall, confused and scared. Had she done something to this girl? She moved forward to Mordred slowly, then changed her mind and backed up again.

Mouse and Mordred

Mouse and Mordred cleaned up the mess on the floor and then Mouse started to check over her wolf as Mordred wrapped an arm around Gwen's waist reassuringly. "You're slipping, Pack. Ya shoulda smelt them as they came up the corridor."

Too many scents. I'm not sure what she is, but she smells like electricity. He's mutant.

"Still shoulda smelt them, wolf." Mouse looked up. "I'm Mouse. He's Fafnir. And you are...?"

"Mordred Llewlyn. And this is Gwen."

"Pleased to meet'cha." Mouse nodded. "And aren't you two the lovebirds. You got the real thing here."

"How...what?" Mordred blinked and then started to enter her mind. Mouse held up a hand.

"Stay out. My mind is my business. I'm empathic, that's how I know. Alien. You're mutant, but the wolf says she's something else."

Gwen

Gwen sat down slowly at the table.

"I'm... I'm a freak. I've had electricity running through me since I was a kid."

Mordred and Mouse

"Don' mean toi un freak, cherie." Mouse nuzzled Fafnir's side. "I hunt with my wolf I go so deep. That make me a freak? No. Mean I got issues."

She smells like blood and pain.

"And you're cutting yourself. Damn, everywhere I go more cutters. Join the freaking club, Gwen."

Mordred glared at Mouse and clenched his fists. "What are you going on about?"

"She's cutting. Wolf smells it, I feel the despair and the sheer self loathing. And I said, join the club. I cut too. Hadn't done it for years, then bam. All the bad stuff hits at once and the knife sings again."

Gwen

Gwen just looked at her feet. She looked towards the door and started backing away heading for it, wanting to run in the direction of her room and never come out again.

Damn, she wasn't meant to be so afraid. She'd once been a master thief, a loner, never needing or caring what people thought about her. And now... now she was this pathetic puddle of a person.

Mordred and Mouse

"Love?" Mordred touched her shoulder, concern in his eyes. Mouse cowered away into Fafnir's side.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, je suis desole, cherie, s'il te plait, stop, please!"

Mouse! Fafnir stood, radiating menace. What is it with this place?

Pack! Help! Mouse whined deep in her throat, tears spilling down her face. Mordred gathered Gwen into his arms and started to back away from the shaking girl. A cascade of images hit him, as Mouse unknowingly amplified Gwen's feelings and hit him with them.

"Oh god, I'm so foul. Such a freak." He started to shake hard.

Gwen

Gwen started to cry into Mordred's shoulder. What was she doing? She didn't belong here, or anywhere for that matter. It was too hard being alive, feeling what she was feeling. Maybe she was better off dead... maybe she shouldn't've come back... maybe she should go back to Tulsa for awhile. Maybe... maybe the solution was the knife in the drawer.

Mouse and Mordred

"Non!" Mouse yelped.

"Gwen, I'm so sorry, so sorry, so sorry..." Mordred started to shake so hard his teeth chattered. "Kill me love, please."

NYX! Fafnir raised his head and howled mournfully.

"Please kill me, love. I don't deserve to live. Don't deserve you, don't deserve none of this..."

Gwen

Gwen was shaking from what Mordred was saying. What was happening? That's right, she was emphatic. Trying to calm herself down, Gwen jumped out of Mordred's arms and ran quickly from the room, not heading for her room but rather outside.

She ran outside, screaming in pain as she let a bolt of electricity come shooting out of her body. She was still screaming as she was struch back by lightening from the sky.

MOuse, Vortigern, Nyx and Mordred

Mouse babbled apologies in a jumbled mixture of Creole patois and English ever as she tried to get further away under the table. Nyx came in, took one look at Mouse and the weeping Mordred and grabbed Mouse from under the table and then ran for it. She needed to get her out of range. For both of their sakes. She passed Vortigern on the way.

"She didn't mean it," Nyx threw back.

"I know." Vortigern ran to his twin and then his brother twisted, looked up at the ceiling and screamed.

"GWEN!" He broke through the fading restraints Xavier had placed on his mind and 'ported. He fell heavily on his side next to ifreak, cherie." Mouse nuzzled Fafnir's Gwen. "Gwen, love, don't be dead, please don't be dead..." he fainted.

Gwen

Gwen opened her eyes and looked blankly at Mordred. She simply smiled.

"Happens... all... the... time." She stopped just as another blast got her. She coughed. "Ouch, ok that one hurt." She tried to sit up, feeling dizzy and as she looked around,, she lost balance and lay back down again.

"I need to get inside..."

Nyx, Mouse, Vortigern and Mordred

Nyx jumped as soon as she got outside the mansion to deep inside the woods. Fafnir appeared soon after. "You look after Pack. You gaurd her with your life."

I look after her. Fafnir promised solomnly. Nyx nodded and started to run back to the mansion, powers drained for the moment. Mouse whimpered and he lay down next to her. She clung to his fur and howled.

Vortigern had stumbled as Mordred fainted, but that just gave him an incentive to run faster.

Gwen

Gwen stared at Mordred lying next to her.

"No, no, no, no not again."

She stood up and screamed out again as the lightening came down upon her again, throwing her against a tree. She felt something snap and she closed her eyes as the pain took over again.

The Mavericks and Nyx

DEM! HELP!

What in the-

You ain't no pather, so take this quick. Vortigern flashed Demetria a picture of where Mordred was lying.

Ow, my head.

Later, Dem.

On my way. Demetria ported, touched both Mordred and Gwen and went to the Medlab. "Dr McCoy!"

"Oh my stars and garters." Beast hurried over. "Help me get them up on the bed." Demetria helped. "They'll both be fine, I think. Gwen has an unusually high tolerance to electricty, though she might jave broken a rib...and Mordred's just fainted. They'll both be fine."

Nyx caught the current of thought and headed back to the forests. She needed to bring Mouse out of the Pack link. It wasn't healthy for her to go in that deep without meaning to.

Gwen

Gwen felt hot, but the air around her was cold. She opened her eyes painfully and didn't recognise where she was, which made her panic. She thrashed around on the bed, not understanding why her sides hurt so much. She ripped the bandages off her arm and used her nails to reopen her cuts.

The electric current running through her body was more charged and higher than it had been in a long time. She could feel it growing, and if she didn't get under control soon, she was going to explode herself.

Taking deep breaths, she let her arms fall to her sides, bleeding like crazy.

Mordred and Demetria

"Oh, my!" Beast hurried over. "Calm down, please. He's fine." He started to rebandage Gwen's wounds deftly, making a mental note to talk to Xavier about her later.

"Help me up, Dem," Mordred whispered hoarsely. Demetria did so silently. He limped over to the bed.

"I really should protest...but if you think it will calm her..." Beast shook his head.

"Hey there, love. 'M fine. Ya didn't touch me, it was that empath shorted me out. That and the prof's damn block. Nuthin to do with you, I promise." He leaned heavily on Demetria and reached out to stroke Gwen's face lightly.

Gwen

Gwen calmed at Mordred's touch.

"Mordred..." she whispered.

She opened her eyes and gave a small smiled before closing them again and letting her mind wander. She felt herself losing consciousness and she surrendered to the darkness, hoping that when she came back, if she came back, her ribs would stop hurting.

Demtria

"Now, young man, if you will return to your bed..." Beast made shooing motions and Mordred went back and lay down on the hospital bed. He quickly fell asleep again and Demetria left, but hesitated for a moment on the doorstep.

"He'll be alright, won't he?"

"Yes, they both will be fine." Beast gave her a smile of reassurance and she smiled back before 'porting back to what she had been doing before Vortigern had made her come.
