22 May 2003 - Auditions

Davyd

Davyd looked at his script one more time. Titanic. He could do this, he could. He would. His father's voice echoed in his head /no good lazy, worthless lay about. Acting isn't a worthwhile, honourable profession. What would your mother say if she could see you? She'd be ashamed! Why, you're gonna go down the path of no return. Don't expect me to bail you out if you run out of cash chasing this rainbow. If you're not going to do law, you're on your own. Why can't you be more like Edward? I can't believe a son of mine.../ He shivered slightly and then tried to concentrate.

"Well, what's a girl like you doin' below decks? With all us riffraff and poor Irish..." he said in a flawless Irish accent, slightly mischevious and rough as honey voice. He grinned. At least he could do this well.

"Davyd Hopewell, auditioning for..." The bored tones of the annoucer called for him and Davyd headed on stage. Please let him get this job. Please, oh please, oh please. He needed a break.

Michael

Mikey looked at the guy who was coming in to audition. Unbelievably adorable. The director gave him the pages to read, and he read them doing a flawless Irish accent.

"I think he's the one," Mikey whispered to the director, the director nodded.

Davyd

Davyd finished his lines and waited for a signal. Go, stay, come back, do a few more...He blinked in the hot lights of the stage, suddenly wishing that he had gone and done Law like his father had wanted him to. "Do you want me to read more?" Still in the accent, then hesitating and slipping back into what he used as his everyday speaking voice. "I can, if you want me to."

"No, I think we've heard enough. Congratulations, you've got the part," the director said. Davyd grinned widely. He wanted to shout or something. This was the first major role he'd gotten since he'd come to NY. Bit parts, yeah...but nothing major and all the bits were few and far between.

"Ok." Davyd started to move off the stage, yelling and screaming for joy inside. He had a part! He wasn't hopeless as an actor.

Michael

After the auditions were over, Michael went up to Davyd.

"Hi, I'm Michael Pitt, we're going to be working together, so I'd like to get to know you better. Would you like to go out for coffee, maybe?" he asked, hoping he wasn't being too obvious.

Davyd

Davyd blinked, then smiled shyly. "Davyd, but I guess you already know that. Sure, I'd love to go out for coffee. When?" He firmly shut out what his father would say. He already knew what they had done to Amadeo, and he wasn't looking forward to it happening to him. He knew it would. He couldn't hide who he was forever.

Michael

"How about," Mikey pretended to look at his watch, "Um, now?" he laughed, turning up the 'I'm a famous actor' charms. He was getting strong blips on his gaydar 'bout this one.

Davyd

"Now sounds good to me. Know anywhere nearby that sells good coffee? I only moved here recently...mainly because of my cousin." And the fact that my father never wants to see me again, but I think I can live with that. Davyd shrugged off the thought irritably, looking away from Mikey for a moment. Then he smiled at Mikey again.

Michael

"Yeah. I live in Brooklyn, but I'm here every day for work, so I know a good cafe down the street. How about you, where are you staying?" Michael chuckled. "I'm just good most of my houseguests have left. Leo's still staying at my apartment, but Mary-Kate and Ashley have gone to stay with some friends." Mikey clapped his hand over his mouth. "Or maybe I shouldn't have told you that? I only said it 'cause you're in the biz, and I figured I could trust you. I can trust you, right?"

Davyd

"Sure, you can trust me. Wouldn't have a clue who to tell anyway." Davyd chuckled slightly. "I found an apartment...it's small but it's cheap. Amadeo wants me to come and stay at his place, he's my cousin?" Davyd gave the sentance, a 'you understand, yeah?' inflection. "He worries. But he's family, so he's meant to."

Michael

"Is it in a bad neighborhood? So many people hgate Brooklyn, but I love it." mikey smiled. "Look, we're here." he brought him into the cafe.

"What would you like, on me," he offered.

Davyd

Davyd looked around. "Brooklyn's not so bad. Different to home..." Lazy good for nothing! You pick that up right now! "Better in some ways. You don't have to buy for me. I can afford it." He glanced at Mikey. "Really. But thanks for offering."

Michael

"No, it's my trea, I insist. I remember the struggling days, and you need to save it for groceries. Trust me. Once we start rehearsels, you'll be eating twice as much, hungry and tired all the time. So, just let me treat. What would you like?"

Davyd

Davyd shook his head, smiling slightly. "Since you insist...latte. Thanks."

Michael

He ordered the drinks, an espresso for himself, and came and sat down across from Davyd.

"SO, tell me about yourself."

Davyd

"Not much to tell really. I come from a town a few hours north of here. My cousin owns a construction company in Westchester. That's Amadeo." Davyd took a sip of his latte. "My father is a lawyer, as is my elder brother. My wanting to be an actor did not go down terribly well, to say the least."

Michael

"Really? My parents didn't go much for it either. I moved out qwhen I was 16. It's funny," Mikey decided to jump right in. "They fought tooth and nail about me acting, but they didn't care a lick when I said I was gay." Michael searched Davyd's face for disgust, or any negative reaction.

Davyd

"I can't tell my father that I am. I...I've already seen what my family's done to Amadeo." Davyrd fiddled with a spoon, unable to look Mikey in the eye. "The actings bad enough, but if I told him I was gay..." He just shook his head.

Michael

Michael put his hand on top of Dave's gently. "If they can't accept you for who you are, then they don't deserve you. It's as simple as that. One thing that's great about the gay community is you get to choose your family." he smiled.

Davyd

"Yeah, well..." Davyd sighed. "I havn't exactly been out in the gay community, so I wouldn't know." He smiled slightly. "I'm not very good with people, usually."

Michael

"I'm going to go out on a limb here, Davyd. I think you're really attractive, and I like you. Would you be interested in going out with me this weekend?" he asked, hoping the answer would be yes.

Davyd

"Yeah, that would be nice." Davyd smiled shyly at Mikey.

Michael

"Actually, and I don't mean to come on too strong, but, poor struggling actors, would you like t o rent a movie and come over to my apartment and watch it tonight? That is if you don't mind Leonardo DiCaprio with bedhead, or the Olsen twins popping by," he chuckled.

Davyd

"All poor struggling actors agree that a rented vid is a good thing to do." Davyd smiled slightly. "I wasn't doing anything anyway. Except staring at the walls. Walls can be fun too."

Michael

"Oh yes. And staring at the ceiling, counting the dots in the panneling," he laughed. They were walking down the street, when Mikey was suddenly struck by lightening.

Davyd

"Holy mother of Christ! Mikey, are you alright?" Davyd knelt down beside Mikey, brown eyes wide with startled worry.

Michael

Mikey laughed. "So invigerating," he asid., "Yeah, I'm fine, happens all the time. Um," he looked sheepish. "There's something else about me you might wanna know." he sent sparts flying from his fingers into a telephone pole. "I'm kinda a mutant."

Davyd

"Me too, " Davyd confided with relief. "I have Voice, helps my acting you know?" He shifted his voice as he spoke, male and female and different accents and ages. "I can do any voice you want but," he settled into his normal one, "obviously, I have to make it believable."

Michael

"Oh, that is so cool. I have electricity, obviously. The one big downside is the getting struck by lightening. But at least I can touch people. THis other girl, Gwen, whenever she touches somebody she shocks them." He said, slipping his hand int Davyd's. "Let's go to my house. You can meet my half-alien ex-boyfriend who starred in the movie version of the play we're doing," he grinned.

Davyd

"Leo's an alien?" Davyd almost squeaked as they walked down the street. "Ok, my weirdnes scale has just gone off the end. There's aliens? Since when?"

Michael

"You know all that stuff about UFOs crashing in Roswell? All true. They spread out, got married, had children, and all that. Leo's father was a Dathrian-- that's a species of alien-- and he has the ability to navigate time. Plus all aliens have the ability to manipulate atoms. It's cool." he grinned. "You'll like him. And I notice the not-freaking out you did when I said my ex-boyfriend lived with me. We're best friends now, but we did date a little. It didn't work, like dating you brother," he made a face.

Davyd

"It would feel kinda weird. And I really do feel sincerely sorry for whatever poor woman marries *my* brother. My cousin, Amadeo, he's a mutant as well. He can Charm people, or put them into sheer unreasoning panic." Davyd shrugged slightly. "Aliens. I'll cope and deal. What was worse was when I was just coming into my powers, that whole voice breaking thing? Hundred times worse. I barely said a word for a year cos I never knew whose voice was gonna come out of my mouth."

Michael

"Oh, that really sucks. I used to put buildingds into power outages, because I absorb electricity into myself, out of power lines and the like. When I was first coming into my powers, I would suck all the electricity out of buildings and send them into blackouts. Not good." he chuckled. They walked into Blockbuster. "What do you wanna get?" he asked.

Davyd

"Amadeo used to send people screaming away, or have them falling over themselves to get into his bed." Davyd shook his head and chuckled slightly. "I'm not fussy. Pick whatever movie ya want."

Michael

HE picked up "Catch Me if You Can," let's have a laugh at my roommate," he said, smiling.

Davyd

"Fine, but I'm telling him you picked it. I was meaning to see this anyway." Davyd smiled back. "It looked good on the ads."

Michael

"Groovy, let's go he said," as he paid for the movie and they headed to Mike's apartment.
