8 May 2003 - Hospital beds

Nathan, Chelsea, Octavian, Demetria, Astrid, Sigurd and Sabre

Nathan sat by Chelsea's bedside, singing quietly. He tried not to listen to the twin who'd encountered Glory. It hurt too much. He shuffled his cards. "I don't know what you want, darlin'. I don't know who you are. But you seem to know who I am, and I want to know who you are..."

Octavian had cried herself out as she sat by Demetria's bedside. She'd gone to what was her bed for the moment, and found her violin. It must have been what Demetria was coming to tell her about. And then Glory's snake had bitten her...oh god, this hurt so bad. She got up and left, the tears streaming down her face again. She couldn't handle seeing Demetria so silent, so still. She just wanted her twin to wake up. She went to her room, picked up her violin and started to play. Beautiful classical music that sounded like weeping spilled from her hands as she closed her eyes and played her grief, eyes too sore for tears and too heartsick for words.

Astrid and Sigurd looked at each other from their respective hospital beds. They'd managed to beat Cain, but not kill him. And the insane mutant had escaped. "Jeg elsker De," Sigurd croaked out. Astrid smiled and sniffed back a tear.

"Jeg elsker De, mitt hjerte."

"Kan hvordan Jeg vært slik blindlokker?" (How could I have been so blind?)

"Det spiller ikke noen rolle nå. Og når vi leger, jager vi igjen." (It doesn't matter now. And when we are healed, we will hunt again.) Astrid's smile was chilling. "Ingen skader de Jeg kjærlighet og blir borte med det." (No one hurts the ones I love and gets away with it.)

"Min vakker Valkyrie," Sigurd sighed. "Vi dreper ham. Og vi dreper denne nyen...Glorificus." (We will kill him. And we will kill this new one...Glorificus.)

"Ja." They both settled back to sleep and heal.

Sabre crooned to his sister as she lay across his lap, hurt and bleeding. Lullabies and nonsense songs. She'd gone mad after she'd found out Dawn had been taken, and Spike hadn't been that far behind her. "Hush, sister mine." She mumbled in her sleep and he soother her hair back down. "We won today. Let tomorrow take care of itself."

Amish, Dru, Rosemary and Michael

Elijah shuddered and shook, the best he could in his full-body cast.

"So dark. Been bad. Biting and scratching and clawing. No more Key. No more life. Gotta hide, gotta die. Died alreay, stabbed and sliced. Bleeding and burning. Life is no more," he cried out in his sing-song voice, much like Dru when she was in her moods. The vampiress wasn't in a much better state. She was pacing back and forth and wringing her hands.

"My pretty baby's gone! It's all my fault! The stars won't sing anymore!" Rosemary was holding her sire trying to calm her down.

"No Mummy, don't cry, you shall find her. The stars will sing for you again." she held Dru close to her and rocked her, kissing her sire's forehead.

Nico sat between Elijah and Becky, holding their hands. Martha held Becky's other hand, and together they prayed.

"Please Lord, we pray that your will be done, and if it's your will, send your healing power into your children." Theresa looked at them like they were crazy.

"IF it's His will?" she asked, infuriated. "How can any of this be His will? How can there even be a God, if He's willing to just sit there and watch all this happen. People are dying, and where if your God? He's sitting away like a scared little bunny!" she screamed, her supersonic voice maken everyone weaken, and she stormed out of the room.

Everyone sitting awake in the infirmary was shaken by Theresa's outburst. But those who had been raised Christians were all thinking the same thing: Had God forsaken them?

---

Michael sat next to Gwen. "Come on Gwenny, you have to wake up. I can't lose my first real student. How can I be a teacher with nobody to teach? I mean, poor Leo is going crazy, with you and Faith gone, who's going to help us carry on our stereotypical fag-hag banter? Leo's been going back in time, trying to find Cain as a baby, and this Ben guy as a baby too, to see if he can change history by killing them, but he hasn't been able to find them yet. Come on girlie, you gotta wake up!"

Bobby and Gwen

Bobby came into the room slowly, sorrow covering his heart. He made his way to Gwen's bed and sat down, and lifted her hand, caressing it.

"Aw Gwen, you gotta wake up. I'm still not clear on Physics..." Bobby smiled weakly. "Come on, I need you, you're like my best friend."

Mordred

Mordred systematically tore a punching bag to shreds, face blank. Punch, punch, punch, kick, punch, slam. His knuckles were bleeding. He hurt, but he couldn't stop this. Otherwise he'd break down. Kick, kick, spin, 'port, hit, punch, slam. If he'd been quicker that first day...if he'd just taken Cain's arm with him or something when he 'ported. If he'd just...PUNCH! The punching bag tore off its chain and Mordred slowly sank to his knees beside it. Harsh tearing sobs disturbed the silence of the training room.
