Miette
Miette had been invited to an alien party. She had accepted the invitation as a chance to meet some more aliens her own age.
When she arrived, she found out that wasn't think only thing she would be meeting. In fact, it seemed this party would be much like a few others she had attended, only with kero instead of alcohol.
"Hey Mi!" A voice greeted her.
"Hi Kate," Miette replied.
"I'm so glad you could make it."
Miette smiled.
Dale
"Katey baby, your shin digs get better each time! Or is it more of a hootenany?" Dale greeted his friend with a hug before noticing another girl.
He extended his hand to her. "Hello, I'm Dale."
Miette
Miette smiled and reached for his hand.
"I'm Miette. But everyone calls me Mi."
SHe chewed her lip nervously.
Dale
"Hey. How come I've never seen you at one of Kate's parties before?"
Dale motioned for her to sit next to him.
Miette
"Never been invited before," Miette replied with a grin. "Umm, let's just say that I only found out about YIRAAS recently. I'm a Light maniuplator. What about you?"
Dale
"Ah, I see."
Dale smiled back and thought of the best way to explain.
"I have elasticity. Here, watch this."
Dale reached to the other side of the room, stretching his arms out and tapping someone on the shoulder, before retracting his arm and pretending it wasn't him when they looked around.
Miette
Miette giggled.
"That's pretty cool. My boyfriend has telekinesis," she had this sudden urge to say, then she hurried on, "and my brother has pyrokinesis."
Dale
Dale grinned.
"Pyrokinesis? Cool."
Dale opted to ignore her boyfriend comment. He reached over and snagged two drinks from the table and handed one to Miette.
"Here."
Miette
Miette looked at the drink hesitantly.
"I'm a hyrid," she said. "I don't know if kero is poisonous to me... I heard that some Dathrian hybrids don't always inherit the ability to drink kero and not die."
Dale
"Hmm... I guess you never know till you try. I'm a hybrid, although at the time, I never knew there was a risk and I went for it. Have it if you want, but if you don't wanna risk it, don't worry. But I think there's a healer here tonight, anyway."
Dale took a swig of his drink.
Miette
Miette took the drink hesitantly and looked at it for a moment. She nervously put it to her lips...
"Mmmm... maybe later," she grinned. "Yes, I'm chicken."
Dale
Dale laughed. "Nah, don't worry about it."
He looked around at the dancing people.
"So, fancy a dance?"
Miette
"Umm, yeah, sure," Miette replied.
She put down the drink, stood up and followed Dale onto the floor.
Dale
Dale took Miette's hand and spun her round on the dancefloor.
"So how long have you known about the alien thing?"
Miette
"As long as I can remember - although I offically found out when my powers emerged at about two," she grinned.
Dale was definitely an attractive guy. Miette found herself thinking that if she wasn't with Isaac, she could defintely go with Dale.
Dale
Dale smiled. "Yeah, I've known since I was a kid too. At first they didn't think I had powers, but then when I was about 3, I was reaching for a toy that was pretty far away, and my arm stretched."
Miette
Miette giggled.
"Cool. I think my Dad got suspicious when I start turning lights on and off and couldn't even reach the switch!"
Dale
Dale paused. "You're a hybrid, right? Alien on mother or father side?"
Miette
"Father," Miette replied. "What about you?"
This was really nice, dancing with Dale. If only he were Isaac...
Dale
"Mother. Kind of interesting. Dad's pretty cool with it though. What about your folks?"
Dale spun Miette around again, enjoying her company. If only she didn't have a boyfriend.
Miette
"Mum's fine with it. In fact, I think she rather enjoys it. It's Dad who has the problem with it. He thinks all aliens are dangerous and he perfers to think of himself as being human," Miette sighed. "It's making for some tension at the moment - especially after Oli ran off - he's my pyrokinetic brother."
Dale
Dale frowned. "Well, I'm glad one of your parents is ok with it. That's pretty unfair on you though."
Miette
Miette shrugged.
"Maybe, but y'know, even with the tension it's a lot better than what it was. Poor Oli, he'd loose his temper and set stuff on fire, all because Dad avoided even acknowdging we even had powers unless he were hardpressed. He never taught us control. I figured it out on my own, but Oli wasn't able to get the hang of it."
She smiled.
"Now I get to make my holograms without having to lock myself in my room first so Dad doesn't catch me."
Dale
"Well there's an upside to everything?" Dale joked uncertainly.
"My parents have always been fairly cool with it. I guess my dad was probably a little freaked at first, especially seeing as I can stretch heaps far and stuff, but he was cool with it."
Miette
Miette smiled.
"Well, you were lucky," she informed him.
A part of her was feeling a little guitly, dancing with another guy... maybe she should pretend it was Isaac...
Dale
"I'm not stepping on any boundaries or anything, am I? Like your boyfriend isn't here giving me deathstares?"
Miette
Miette paused.
"No... yes... I don't know... Isaac - my boyfriend - lives in the USA. We've been dating two months now, but a long distance relationship... it's real hard."
Dale
"I guess it would be." Dale continued dancing with Miette for a second.
"Do you wanna stop, or is this ok?"
Miette
"No..." Miette replied after a moment's consideration. "This is fine. I'll ahh, I'll let you know otherwise."
Dale
Dale nodded.
"Ok. Just don't wanna make you feel uncomfortable."
Miette
Miette smiled.
"Well, thank you for your consideration," she said.
A slow song came on then, and Miette stopped.
"I think I'll sit this one out."
Dale
Dale grinned.
"I thought that one might get a bit too... couple-y."
He sat down next to her.
Miette
Sitting down next to Dale, Miette's mind was going haywire.
"I, uhh... I think I'm ready to try that kero now..."
She picked up the drink and took a very large mouthful. If she died, what did it matter? At least then the guilty feeling would go away.
Dale
Dale grinned but put his hand on her shoulder as she swallowed the kero.
"You ok?"
Miette
"Well, I'm still alive, aren't I?"
She leant back.
"Dang it... I miss him so much!"
Dale
"Yeah, same." Dale joked.
"I'm guessing we're talking about the American boyfriend?"
Miette
Miette gulped down some more kero.
"Yes... oh I'm sorry, Dale, you probably don't want to hear it."
Dale
"Hey, if nothing more, I'm willing to give this friendship a shot."
He paused and took another swig of his drink.
"Unless you don't wanna be my friend."
Miette
Miette smiled.
"Hey you seem like a nice guy to me," she said. "I'm happy to be friends."
Dale
"Well, that's a relief. For a minute there I thought I was gonna have to go make a new friend."
Dale smiled warmly at her.
"So tell me about the boyfriend?"
Miette
Miette smiled.
"Well, Ike and I met over the net a few years ago," she giggled. "We started being silly and calling each other 'gorgeous' and 'darling' and stuff. We didn't tell each other our names though, not unil I got my YIRAAS membership and saw his contact details in the directory. I asked him about it, and yeah... it kinda went from there. I went to the USA in February, during the tournament and we finally got to meet. And we decided to go out then."
She leaned back.
"We already acted like so much of a couple already."
She held out her hand.
"He gave me this ring."
Dale
Dale nodded. "That's actually kinda nice."
He sat back in his chair and grabbed another drink. "He sounds like a nice guy. Which is good. Well, for you, but not so much for me."
Miette
Miette giggled.
"I'll take that as a compliment," she grinned.
But inside she was feeling very, very nervous. She gulped down some more kero.
Dale
Dale grinned. He finished his drink and then reached for another one.
"So, you live around here?"
Miette
"A few blocks away," Miette replied with a nod. "You?"
Dale
"Just down the road. Kate and I have been friends since we were just kids."
Dale paused and finished off his drink.
"What about you, how long have you known Kate?"
Miette
"I met Kate a couple of weeks ago. Through Cathy Morris," Miette replied. "I saw Cathy's recent performance. She's an amazing dancer! I bet her having Flight really helps."
She giggled.
"She turned down my brother Jason for a date. Good for her. Jason's a real moron. And besides he don't even got any powers. Unless you count repelling women with his bad habits."
She frowned, a little confused. Wow, she was babbling. Weird.
Dale
"You want some more kero?"
Dale reached over and grabbed two more glasses and offered one to Miette. He took another swig.
"I don't know how many I've had tonight."
Miette
Miette stared at the bottom of her original galss for a good thirty seconds.
"Oh wow..." she said. "I finished it. I had no idea."
She took the offered glass from Dale and had a drink.
Dale
Dale grinned.
"You should take it easy. You'll probably feel like crap in the morning if you don't."
Miette
"Vewy goooooood advice," Miette nodded vigorously. "Y'know what? One time Oli went to dis party and he drunk all this alcohol. He drank more than all his buddies and only ended up a wittle bit tipsy while they were like, all passed out on the floor."
She giggled madly.
Dale
"Ok, maybe that's enough for you." Dale tried to take the glass away from Miette and he finished his. He reached for another one and downed it in record time.
"Ok, head spins."
Miette
Miette frowned.
"Now how is it dat you get to keep drinking and I don't?"
She stared at Dale for a moment, then squinted and giggled.
"You know what? In dis light if ya squint and sorta tilt your head, you look just like Ike."
Dale
"Because I can hold my drink."
Dale emphasised his point by falling off the chair.
"The earth spins too fast."
Miette
Miette laughed at Dale.
"Maybe... maybe... maybe you should tell it to slow down. Dat might help."
Dale
Dale pouted and pulled Miette onto the floor with him.
"Ha, not my fault that I am... in floor. You... shouldn't be on floor."
Miette
Miette looked around wildly.
"Umm..."
She looked at the floor.
"I fink the floor needs a clean."
Dale
Dale chuckled.
"Tell it to her."
He pointed at Kate and leaned in closer to Miette.
"Wait, you gots somethings on your nose."
Miette
Miette looked at Dale wide-eyed.
"I do? What... what is it?"
Dale
Dale peered at her nose.
"Wait."
He reached over and brushed an eyelash from her nose and fell into her lap.
"Oop, sorry."
He struggled to sit up again and when he did, he looked into her eyes.
"Your eyes are brown."
He kissed her gently.
Miette
Miette kissed Dale back, and when she pulled away she started crying.
"I've missed you so much Ikey."
Dale
Dale sat up and helped Miette up onto the couch again.
"Ikey?"
Miette
Miette sniffed and gazed at Dale through her tears.
"Ohhhhhh you're not my Ikey... I want my Ikey... do you know where he is? He was here just a se'nd ago..."
Dale
Dale looked around and helped Miette up.
"C'mere. We should get you outside. You needs some airs."
He led her out to the balcony.
Miette
Miette couldn't even stand on her own two feet. She looked out at the stars.
"Mmm, dis is... niiiiiice."
Dale
Dale practically dragged Miette out and let her slump onto the railing. He put his arms around her and kissed her cheek.
Miette
Miette gave a little sigh and closed her sleepy eyes. She rested her head on his shoulder.
Dale
Dale hugged her tightly.
"This is nice."
Miette
"Mmm... yesssh it isssss..."
And in a few moments, she was asleep.
Dale
Dale lifted Miette easily into his arms and went back into the house. He found Kate.
"Hey, can I put her in your bed?"
"Yeah, sure."
Dale carried her through to Kate's bedroom and placed Miette on the bed gently. He kissed her cheek and left quietly.
