Isaac and Miette
Isaac and Miette were at the Zoo.
"You go back home tomorrow," Isaac said as they watched the chimps playing.
"Yeah. Aww, aren't they so cute? Look at the little baby."
Isaac smiled.
"Very cute," he agreed.
They watched in a kind of amused slience.
"Ike?"
"Yeah?"
"What... what are we?"
"What do you mean?" he asked, even though he had a pretty good idea what she meant.
"Well..." Miette paused. "You're always getting teased - by Zac anyway - about liking me. I mean, that's no secret to anyone here. And everyone knows that I like you. And we go around on dates and holding hands and stuff, and everyone's basically assuming, assuming..."
"That's we're boyfriend/girlfriend?" Isaac finished. "Yeah, I know."
"And don't get me wrong. I... I... I... don't mind that so much. I mean if... well yeah... you know. But as you obvserved only moments agao, I'm going back to England tommorrow. Is it possible for us to have a long distance relationship? Or should we just forget this discussion and stick with being good friends?"
Isaac was slient for a long time.
"You could always finish your studies here."
Miette smiled.
"I am not leaving all my friends and family to live with you, Ike. We aren't that serious. We don't even know how serious we are."
"Yeah, I guess. I'd offer to come live with you, but somehow I don't think that would work out very well either."
"No. Probably not."
Further silence.
"We managed to go years knowing each other online," Isaac pointed out. "And when you think about it, with all the stuff we got up to - darling."
Miette giggled.
"I think that's the first time we've actually verbally called the other 'darling'."
"I think so too. Funny that."
"I suppose it's more awkward than online so do stuff like that."
"Well, look, I'll acknowledge that it'll be hard being so far away, but I think I'd like to try, if you would."
Miette nodded slowly.
"And if we break up because of distance, we can still be friends right?"
"Always."
"Good."
