15 February 2003 - After Dinner

Mouse and Bastet's children

The cats cornered Mouse after the dinner was over, eyes serious.

"Ok, what's up guys?" Mouse asked. They shared a glance, then Nyx took a breath.

"Now that Bastet has claimed you-"

"Still not happy about that whole claiming without permission thing," Mouse interupted with a frown.

"Well, anyway," Nyx huffed, annoyed at being interupted, "we have a responsibility towards you as our mother's claimed." Sabre handed Mouse a cardboard folder. "Congratulations. You're now a member of legitmate society. You even went to high school. Did well too."

"Huh?" Mouse opened it and flicked through the papers, confused.

"I went hacking. You now exist legally." Sabre shrugged. "We made you up a few accounts, there's a platinum Visa in there, passport, birth certificate and the deeds to an apartment in Tulsa. You kow, stuff that makes the livin' easier."

"Huh?" Mouse gaped at them.

"We have a *lot* of money, and we hardly ever buy stuff. You needed stuff in a material sense, so we did this." Nyx's tone made it obviously clear that she thought it was all very simple. "Mom leaves this side of the claiming to us."

"Please, just accept, sweetling," Priss urged before Mouse could open her mouth. "Thou wilt want for nothing, for thou art ours now. Family, or as thy wolf says, pack. We look after our family."

Mouse felt her eyes tearing up. She'd been wondering what she would do; she couldn't stay at the Hansons forever after all. This solved a lot of problems before they formed. "Thanks."

"It's really nothing," Sabre chuckled, running a hand through her hair in an affectionate gesture. "We're cats, after all."

"And you should see what compound interest can do in a few hundred years. Whew!" Nyx fanned herself with a hand. "The apartment is not that far from the Hansons. It's nearby, anyway. Bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room. Small, but comfy. And they don't have a problem with animals. *That* was the hard part, finding somewhere that would take Fafnir."

"I guess there's really nothing I can say except, thank you. Thank you, very very much." Nyx and Priss hugged her, before turning to go.

"See ya later, sweetie."

"Fare thee well, Mouseling." The two female cats disappeared into the crowds, and Sabre lingered a moment.

"Have fun with it. Money is for spending, ye know." With that, he took off and Mouse slowly wandered back to where the Hansons were staying, the folder clutched protectively to her chest as Fafnir loped at her side.
