14 February 2003 - wandering through the stalls

4:35pm

Isaac and Miette

Isaac and Miette were on their own. Oliver was undoubtably hanging out with Dawn and Nyx, and Isaac's family were scattered all over the joint.

"Never in my life did I imagine there were so many aliens," Miette said, looking at the crowds in awe.

"Well, some of the people you're looking at are human," Isaac pointed out. "And a good portion of them are hybrids, but I take your point."

Miette nodded as she took a bite of... something that was on a stick.

"Mmm, this is nice. What is it?"

Isaac laughed.

"It's a hubtargi."

Miette looked at him blankly.

"It's basically a cross between ice cream, toffee and chocolate. You can't just follow a recipie, you have to be actually taught how, because the atom manipulation power is needed to fuse to together just right."

"You know this from experience?"

"As far as my cooking expertise goes, I'm not that good," he replied, and took a bite of his own. "Bbb mmm cnn..."

He swallowed.

"Sorry. But Mom can make a decent one if she so chooses."

Miette nodded. Then something caught her eye.

"Oh look! Fuzzles!"

Isaac followed her gaze and saw the stall with all the little coloured fuzzles playing around. Miette practically dragged him over to take a look.

"Oh, aren't they adorable?" she asked, her eyes glittering.

Isaac just grinned.

"Can I touch them?" she asked the stall keeper.

He nodded. Happily, Miette reached her hand out towards them slowly. A few of them approached her hand curiously, then, after deciding it was safe, went about their games. A blue one even leapt into her palm.

"Aww, he likes you," Isaac smiled.

"Actually, it's she," the stall keeper said.

"How do you tell?"

"The females are slighter bigger have have longer fur."

"Oh," but Isaac still couldn't tell the difference.

"I wish I could have one," Miette said wistfully as the little fuzzle curled up on her hand.

"Why can't you?" asked Isaac.

"Dad, remember?"

"Oh yeah."

Miette sighed and reluctantly put the fuzzle down. Then she stepped away from the stall. Isaac was quick to follow.

"Hey, I'm sure everything is gonna work out for you soon," he assured her. "And then you can have all the fuzzles you want."

She didn't reply. Isaac wracked his brain, trying to work out how to remedy the situation.

"Ah ha!" he said as his eyes fell on another stall. "This way please!"

He took her hand and pulled her over to the stall. He gestured his hand to the merchandise.

"What do you see?" he asked.

"Mood rings," Miette replied, looking confused.

"Wrong!" Isaac said delightedly. "They're rainbow crystal rings. They only look like mood rings. They change colour - as you can see - depending on their surroundings. You could wear one in plain view of your dad and he wouldn't even twig. Outside of events like this even aliens get fooled. It's all good. Which one would you like?"

"Umm..."

"Hi, can I help you?" asked the cheery girl who was minding the stall.

"She's just deciding on a ring," Isaac informed her.

"Okay."

"Ike, I don't know..." Miette began.

"C'mon, I really want to get you something."

"Yeah, let him," encouraged the girl. "What else are boyfriends for?"

"Oh, we're not dating."

"Oh, sorry. My mistake. I just figured, it being Valentine's day and all -"

"It's Valentines day?" Isaac asked. "Oh yeah, it is too. I was so excited about the tournament I completely forgot."

Miette giggled.

"Well, of course, you know what this means, don't you? I'm gonna have to get you a heart shaped one," he decided. "And we'll get the case with it as well."

"Okay," the girl said.

Isaac paid and then put the ring on Miette's finger.

"There you go," he said. "And here's the case. Just in case you feel the need to hide it from your dad somewhere."

Miette smiled.

"Thank you."

"Ooh! look at the time! The Conjuring contest is gonna start soon. That's always a great one to watch, and besides, Jess is in it."

"Well, let's go watch then."

And the two headed towards where Conjuring would be held.
